An enjoyable and rollicking ride, this collection contains 20 short stories that explore a broad spectrum of the undead, from Romero-style corpses to zombies inspired by Canadian Aboriginal mythology, all shambling against the background of the Great White North. The anthology's specific focus on Canadian settings distinguishes it from the pack, and its exploration of many types of zombies weaves a vast compendium of fiction.Strong writing and imagination are showcased in clever stories that take readers through thrills, chills, kills, carnage, horror, and havoc wreaked across the country. Tales deal with a lone human chasing zombies across an icy landscape after the apocalypse, whales returning from the depths to haunt the southern coast of Labrador, a marijuana grow-op operation in British Columbia experiencing problems when the dead begin to attack, and a corpse turned into a flesh puppet for part of a depraved sex show, among other topics. Providing a unique location and mythology that has not been tackled before, Dead North will appeal to speculative fiction, horror, and zombie fans.

Review
Overall Dead North is an excellent Canadian anthology, incorporating stories set across Canada and exploring diverse cultures and themes. It's also an excellent horror anthology, with some truly disturbing, and yet enticing, tales. - Paper Droids.
"What you've got is a fun and ecclectic mix of zombie fiction, with a special interest in environmental issues and the sometimes thin line that separates the quick and the dead." - Toronto Star
"Dead North features quirky tales of the undead that are uniquely Canadian" - The Vancouver Province
Not surprisingly, the most successful stories in Dead North are the ones that eschew traditional George A. Romero-inspired survivalist tropes and strike out in new directions. - Quill and Quire

Maybe Rethink Heading North During A Zombie Apocalypse
By Ursula K. Raphael
When I think of zombie literature, I think of outbreaks described in the States, the UK and, on occasion, Australia. Canada has simply been that place that American survivors try to flee to in the stories. While I am no stranger to Canadian authors, I've never given much thought to apocalyptic outbreaks scenarios up North, which is a poor reflection on my imagination, especially considering that I live "next door" in Michigan. And - wow - have I been missing out on some great zombie stories!
The reason I picked up this anthology is because I had heard that one of my favorite Canadian authors, Chantal Boudreau, had written another zombie story (she's one of my favorite YA authors as well). I've also been looking for something a little less mainstream, and, well, original. I don't know what impressed me more: the diversity of the stories in this collection, or the strong cultural themes within. And, for that, all of the authors should be commended.
Of course, when you've read as much zombie-lit as I have over the years, you begin to develop a palette for certain flavors of undead horror. So, some of the stories appealed to me more than others. There are, I think, 20 stories in this anthology (I may have miscounted), so, rather than review each one, I am going to highlight my personal favorites:
THE HERD by TYLER KEEVIL was the first story, and a great way to begin this undead buffet of gore and drama. The Herd reminded me of the movie Ravenous, but with zombies.
KEZZIE OF BABYLON by JAMIE MASON has a zombie horse. Enough said.
THOSE BENEATH THE BOG by JACQUES L. CONDOR was the most frightening story in the anthology, as far as I'm concerned. I would really love to see more horror from this author in the future.
GROUND ZERO: SAINTE-ANNE-DE-BELLEVUE by CLAUDE LALUMIERE had me hooked with the first paragraph, and dragged me down a path of unexpected terror.
DEAD DRIFT by CHANTAL BOUDREAU is sure to please her fans. I loved the source of the zombie virus, and I wish that she would turn this story into a full-length novel.
HALF GHOST by LINDA DeMEULEMEESTER was the very last story in the anthology, and a great way to wrap it all up. The creepy-factor was very high in this undead tale, but it left me wanting more. Prequel? Sequel? In any case, it left me hungry for more (pun ABSOLUTELY intended).
I have learned my lesson. From now on, I will make sure to include Canadian zombie lit in my reading list, and I recommend Dead North to my fellow zombiephiles, regardless of which country you live in.

Time to go DEAD NORTH
By Aeion Sol
Once again the Canadians are showing the way. In the Zombie Anthology, DEAD NORTH, are a series of stories that reflect humans confronting newly revivified and often carnivorous undead. So whether it’s the quirky Love story of Melissa Yuan-Ines WAITING FOR JENNY REX to the savagery of Tyler Keevil’s THE HERD to the assault upon religious fanatics at Marijuana grow farm in Jamie Mason’s KEZZIE OF BABYLON, DEAD NORTH confronts the paradox of zombies present us with humor, horror and humanity. In this collection of stories we explore such themes as religious zealotry, superstition, fatalism and all our anxieties, past and present, projected against the backdrop of the return of the living dead. Employing the device of zombie, editor Silvia Moreno-Garcia has gathered together an excellent series of stories for those who love zombie genre fiction and those who maybe wonder what the fuss is all about. Add DEAD NORTH to your reading list and horror book collection.
