About the Author

Marge Lial was always interested in math; it was her favorite subject in the first grade! Marge's intense desire to educate both her students and herself has inspired the writing of numerous best-selling textbooks. Marge, who received Bachelor's and Master's degrees from California State University at Sacramento, is now affiliated with American River College.

 

Marge is an avid reader and traveler. Her travel experiences often find their way into her books as applications, exercise sets, and feature sets. She is particularly interested in archeology. Trips to various digs and ruin sites have produced some fascinating problems for her textbooks involving such topics as the building of Mayan pyramids and the acoustics of ancient ball courts in the Yucatan.

 

Raymond N. Greenwell earned a B.A. in Mathematics and Physics from the University of San Diego, and an M.S. in Statistics, an M.S. in Applied Mathematics, and a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from Michigan State University, where he earned the graduate student teaching award in 1979. After teaching at Albion College in Michigan for four years, he moved to Hofstra University in1983, where he currently is Professor of Mathematics.

 

Raymond has published articles on fluid mechanics, mathematical biology, genetic algorithms, combinatorics, statistics, and undergraduate mathematics education. He is a member of MAA, AMS, SIAM, NCTM, and AMATYC. He is currently (2002-2005) governor of the Metropolitan New York Section of the MAA, as well as webmaster and liaison coordinator, and he received a distinguished service award from the Section in 2003. He is an outdoor enthusiast and leads trips in the Sierra Club’s Inner City Outings program.

 

Nathan P. Ritchey earned a B.A. in Mathematics with a minor in Music from Mansfield University of Pennsylvania. He earned a M.S. in Applied Mathematics and a Ph.D. in Mathematics from Carnegie Mellon University. He is currently a Professor of Mathematics and Chair of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Youngstown State University. He has published articles in economics, honors education, medicine, mathematics, operations research, and student recruitment. Nate is a Consultant/Evaluator for the North Central Association's Higher Learning Commission and regularly participates in program evaluations.

In recognition of his numerous activities, Nate has received the Distinguished Professor Award for University Service, the Youngstown Vindicator's "People Who Make a Difference Award," the Watson Merit Award for Department Chairs, the Spirit in Education Award from the SunTex corporation, and the Provost's Merit Award for significant contributions to the Honors Program.

MISSING GRAPHING CALCULATOR

This packaging is a complete fabrication. Amazon.com states that if you by the entire package that you will receive the graphing calculator. This is an utter and complete LIE!!. I have written feedback concerning this as soon as the rest of the package arrived and have received no response from Amazon.com. It has been over a week with no comment and no response as to how they planned on rectifying the situation. There are many sellers on this site and I have never had any problem with them, however, each time that I order anything from Amazon itself there has been a problem. This will be the last time that I get taken in by Amazon but, I will continue to purchase from the other sellers directly via their emails.

Shame on you Amazon for not being better than Ebay or any of your sellers.

Very good coverage of the topics. But I would have started the book with Chapters 7, 8, and 9 since those concepts are a bit easier to grasp than the concepts covered in Chapters 2, 4, and 4.

Clarification in case you don't understand the description

The title/description is a little confusing, but in case you are wondering, it DOES include the MML pack you need to do your homework. I wasn't sure by the description what all came with it, but it is the Book (new) and it does indeed include the new MML pack with the new code. It also includes the manual for graphing calcs. I was surprised it included all of this as new considering the price was so low comparably.

It's what you need for the class though!

Also, it's the best price I could find by far.

If you've never read a leadership book before, get this one.

Read this when I was a college kid and I enjoyed how practical it was. Now that I work in organizational development, I was amazed at how true and how empowering it was seeing it again with years of experience later. Great primer on how to lead others. If you've never read a leadership book before, get this one. It reads fast, it's easy to learn, and easy to implement.

Direct and To The Point

Good book. It provided practical information in a logical and well thought-out manor. It wasn't too wordy and got right to the point. It didn't insult the reader's intelligence, like so many other development books, by reciting countless case studies one after another. It was a great mixture of conceptual ideas and applicable techniques.

Many years ago my friends and I would sit around and play what we called "Jerry Springer: the Home Game". I do not believe I have any wisdom to share in this telling, nor is it even an inspirational tale of achievement by overcoming adversity, it is simply my life that I have survived. For better or for worse, this is the mostly true, fairly accurate, and almost completely factual account of my life. Some liberties have been taken to protect the somewhat innocent and a few small embellishments were made for the sake of a good story.

About the Author
Lisa Orban was born in Galesburg, IL in 1969. She was moved by her parents (without even asking!) to Quincy as a small child. Bouncing from parent to parent, and house to house until at 16 she was given a broader tour of the state courtesy of foster care. At 18, she voluntarily left for Phoenix with a high school friend where she lived for three years. After returning to Quincy, she went to college and earned an Associates of Arts in Psychology, with a minor in Art. Over the years she has held many jobs, but never quite found the right one. She has written poetry and short stories on a variety of subjects from raising children to finance for online publication. Finally in 2013, after much urging from her friends for years, she sat down one day and started writing about her life.She is the mother of five children, all grown and gone, except her youngest. Which she is sure is trying to drive her mad (as all teenagers do) and has plans to write another book in the future about their childhood, much to their anticipated dismay.
She currently lives in her hometown, in the house she loves, and at the center of the chaos she enjoys so much. Often surrounded by her children, her loves, friends and the strays (both two legged and four) she takes in. She continues to seek out new adventures, misadventures and new mistakes to fill the pages of her next book, laughing as she goes.

A Must-Read. Should be Mandatory for All Participants in Foster Care & Faculties in the Educational System. Laughs & Tears.

When the author contacted me seeking a review, I agreed to read this as a free borrow through my Kindle Unlimited account. Within 50 or so pages, though, I was so overtaken by the trials and travesties within this story that I bought it for my Kindle library. It is a hard book to put down and forget about.

Although I am giving this first edition five stars due to its immense potential value to society, as should be apparent in the paragraphs below, there is a visible need for professional editing that I hope the author will understand and employ.

Most of the editing errors concern commas or, what I call, autocorrect stumbles. Before I discuss that, I often commit these types of mistakes myself. Often I commit glaring spelling errors, myself, because I have vision problems while writing on my iPhone, and because I’m afraid to turn off the autocorrect. Further, unlike the errors I can’t miss seeing that are committed by others, no matter how hard I try, I am unable to successfully proof my own typing. If and when I write a Kindle book I hope I have the sense to search for and employ a professional editor.

That brings us to our discussion of this otherwise terrific book It’ll Feel when it Quits Hurting. The author commonly uses the possessive sense, or the apostrophe, in places where it is not proper, or does not use it when it is needed, but far less frequent is this mistake. And, on a very few occasions, such as location 2246, (the last line just before the chapter heading My Kingdom For a Story, the word shallow is used instead of swallow – this is the sort of typo I refer to, correctly or not, as ‘an autocorrect’ error.

But please don’t let such mistakes and oversights spoil your opportunity to gain an insight that is of utmost value in our society. The stories of this writer have likely been on for eons, but, as our society slips and slides through the current phase, these tragedies are gaining frequency. At least, that is my belief. At any rate, more of us should get her perspective into adolescence during foster care.

Yes, I know it is tough being a parent, and still tougher being a foster parent. After all, manuals and procedures and studies and installation/operating instructions are prevalent for most anything in our society, except as regards raising a child or in maturing into middle age or into the status of becoming a senior citizen.

Also, the faculties in our school districts should be required to read this book. There is a bit in this memoir that, while it is hilarious in the reading, it speaks volumes in terms of the prejudice and inherent profiling (racial and otherwise) that pervades our educations system.
But, even those instances are not adequate summaries as to why I rate this a must-read, five star triumph.

The author’s life is much that of a character in a Stephen King masterpiece. She is almost Carrie in the flesh. Yet, despite failed parenting and failures by most of those caring for her in her years as a foster child, and despite the snafus within her school years, Lisa Orban, the author, grew up and bettered herself by attending college and earning an Associate of Arts Degree in psychology.

I suppose one reason I can so readily identify with her growing up is, my first wife (of 26 years) had also spent time in foster care in Ohio. She also had a horrid experience in her home, with her step father, after she was recovered from her nightmare in that previous foster care. Her siblings also experienced hardship and tragedy under the same roof.

But, unlike my first wife, Orban was born during a later period, a society only beginning to trudge through the result of the sexual revolution and racial/sexual/sexual preference issues, and, itself, a victim of the Supreme Court decisions regarding school prayer and abortion. I know my fellow liberal democrats will not look kindly on that statement, but, I believe in candor and openness. Our society has been reaping what earlier Supreme Court decisions sowed.

Anyway, I know this is a review of Orban’s works, not a platform upon which I should pontificate. My opinion, as stated above, though, has pertinence to the appreciation of a rollicking good roller coaster ride through life by someone who has dared to open herself up to ridicule in order that we can enjoy the trip with her, or share the joys, heartbreaks and fears with her.

I pray, though, that a sufficient number of readers gain an insight into her topsy-turvy life and rejection and love so that we can make a better system for the care of children, especially in foster homes, and in schools, for the children she and her children bring into our world.

Oh, her story of her grandfather is terrific, reminding me of one of my mother’s boyfriends when she was quite young. He was a twiddler and my grandmother asked him if he could do something besides twiddle like that. His reply? He reversed the twiddling.

The overarching message I took from her narrative of grandfather was that it instilled in her a certain innocence and love that, deep down, permitted her to survive the grief that was to come.

Again, this is a must-read story that should be compulsory to all foster-dare homes and the entire educational system. There is a wealth of education between the covers of It’ll Feel Better When It Quits Hurting.

A rare gem

I laughed, I cried and most of all, I FELT. Sorrow, joy and amusement in equal measure. I also felt the echo in my own life of some of Lisa's stories, especially her teenage and young adulthood escapades. I think every reader will feel the same connection to some parts of Lisa's life. Reading like a series of short stories with a lifetime arc, this is a book that was hard to put down and one I highly recommend.

Lisa's book suffers from many grammatical errors, as do most self-published books, but unlike the fictional pieces I've read, the errors and mistakes didn't get in the way of the narrative. They're easily forgiven because of the knowledge that this is, above all, an honest book that doesn't spare the author or the reader. This is a book like none other I've read.

The author provided the book free of charge to me in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.

Foster Care: What is it, really?

IF you don't give the topic of foster care much of your time, you may want to live the experiences of Lisa Orban, who will certainly give you much more than an executive overview. I was raised in a few orphanages in the 40s and 50s so I had empathy with this unique author's look back at her past. Her book is quite informative and may very well become the "bible" on the foster care industry. Parents especially will benefit from reading It'll Feel Better when it Quits Hurting. Be preparied for both shock and amazement as it also deal with the troubling reality of domestic abuse. But like icing on the cake it also provides you with humor to soften the blow. Any domestic violence organisation would surely benefit from the messages in Lisa's well-written book. If you have never met a domestic violence survivor, you must meet this author. You will be both blessed and enlightened.

Frangipane does it again...

I was pleased to see that our Leader chose this book for our women's group study at our church. This book has been around for years but It gets more and more important and apropos as our times gets darker and darker. Francis makes it clear that transformation of our cities must begin with a personal revelation of our own life. It is a book full of compassion, grace and honesty for the hungry, serious disciple. I might throw another plug in for his book called "A Place of Intimacy". This is my favorite. All of this humble Iowa man's books are worth reading and observing. Yum!

After reading some critics, i feel like contributing to defend this text.
First, when is this book useful?
Based on the American educational system: when you're an undergrad student in physics, that is when you've already been exposed to the origins of quantum mechanics through a class often called "modern physics", and have some basics in calculus and linear algebra. But most importantly: if you intend to study physics further, because if you're just in for a tasting go for Susskind's or something similar.

Now if you're a demanding or unusually advanced undergraduate student: relax !!!
You will get to read many other books about QM so don't ask this one to be what it's not claiming to be:
This is not an advanced text and by no means sufficient by itself if you're really committed to studying physics; it is not completely introductory either in the sense that you won't learn about the history of the subject or won't get a purely axiomatic, rigorous approach either. It is designed to make you USE quantum mechanics, sometimes (yes!) even before it tells you what you're doing, so that part of your deeper understanding is built out of your own experience studying examples or working through problems. This said, it also provides good insights and often takes the simplest route to make a point, with a language that i find as entertaining and clear as in his E&M book.

Now studying QM will always be a tricky business because there are so many ways to approach the subject and try to make sense of it, while our brain is truly wired for classical mechanics. You will find the book that does it for you at some point but will have to read several of them no matter what: if you don't get a kick out of this one go somewhere else, but i personally found it extremely helpful and clear. My graduate text was Weinberg, which is fantastic when you're an advanced grad student but almost unreadable when you're not and i heavily relied on Griffiths and some other, popular intermediate books, to help decipher it.

So this is a truly intermediate text and will take you to the meatier treatments of such as Sakurai, Merzbacher, Cohen-Tannoudji and others like a charm; if not, then just go straight to them. And if you're a Vulcan or a mathematician go straight to Weinberg!

International edition

Ink is such bad quality, it smears when you wipe a finger across it. Some pages are printed with the last letter on each line being extremely bold. The most annoying part about this book, however, is that the problems are put in a different order than the US edition (this is an international edition, in case you didn't know from the price). This is for no reason other than to try to force US students to buy the more expensive US version. Do yourself a favor and find a PDF version of the book or get Chegg to find the actual problems your professor assigns; both versions contain the same problems, just in a different order with different numbers. 1 star for the US version being the image and, by far, the pettiest tactic I have ever seen a publisher try with an international edition.

Great textbook, worth it to buy the original

This is an *amazing* book. Unfortunately, the international edition I got had an error where all the important symbols and glyphs were misprinted (e.g. < Ψ* | iħd/dx | Ψ > becomes < Ψ* ihd/dx Ψ >).
This is a huge problem, and these misprints caused me to waste hours of my time solving problems that didn't actually make any sense because some of the symbols were altered.

If you have any commitment to quantum physics beyond a passing interest, you're really gonna want the more expensive hardcover edition of the book, which is what I bought after a month of frustration with this version.
