About the Author
John Ross MacDuff was born May 23, 1818 in Bonhard, Scotland. He died at his home in Chislehurst, Kent, England on April 30, 1895. John Ross MacDuff was a Presbyterian minister and a prolific writer of excellent Christian books and materials. He was especially known for the practical, poetic, and devotional qualities of his work. He was also a published poet and hymn writer. John Ross MacDuff had Doctor of Divinity Degrees from the University of Glasgow and the University of New York. He served as a pastor for many years in several churches, including the Church of Scotland. One of the hymns John Ross MacDuff wrote the words for was Christ Is Coming! - Published in 1853.

What Would Jesus Think?

The essence of spiritual maturity is Christlikeness.The more we have the mind of Christ(the more we think like Him)then we will increasingly speak and act like Him,not in a robotic sense,but our individual persona will still be evident.This is similar to the Scriptures being God's Word and the words of the prophets and the apostles as well.We still see the individual personalities of the writers ,but it is nonetheless God's inspired,infallible and authoritative Word.The title chapters give much light concerning 'The Mind Of Our Savior' and eighteenth century Scottish preacher John Macduff further elucidates the mind of Jesus,for the reader by expounding Phillipians 2:5 'Let this mind be in you,which was also in Christ Jesus'.Some of the illuminating chapter titles are:Compassion,Unselfishness,Submission to God's Word,Devotedness to God,Bearing the cross,Not Retaliating,Prayerfulness... .
If anything marks the generation in which we live-it is the love and concern for self above all else.This mindset is propagated in advertising,the media,television,movies music,art etc.It is imbedded in our culture.Pastor MacDuff astutely observes p.27"When the love of God was dethroned from the soul,self vaulted into the vacant seat,and there,in some one of its ever-changing shapes,continues to reign." What a contrast should there be in God's people.The author asks a couple of searching questions-p.28 "Have you been sitting at the feet of Him who 'pleased not Himself? Are you dying daily-dying to self as well as to sin?
In looking at the compassion of our redeemer MacDuff writes concerning Jesus healing of the leper-Jesus,being moved with compassion,put forth his hand and touched him." Does human need stir up compassion in us as it did our Lord and Savior?If we are becoming more like our Savior,it should.What is the deepest need that we are daily faced with in our fellow man?Their need of salvation,they need the Savior to heal their sin sick souls.If we indeed have compassion,that should stir up holy zeal in us to reach the lost with the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.
On humility the godly MacDuff says that we should say with John the Baptist-'He must increase-but I must decrease.' Humility reveals our family likeness,it shows that we are sons of the most High.
Oh Lord,that your people would increasingly reflect your image in thought,word and deed.Would you be pleased to use this book to that end,for your eternal honor and glory.
