Pragmatic and insightful -- good reference

This is a very readable and pragmatic book for anyone interested in understanding how people contribute to the organization's ability to act intelligently, learn, and produce results.

The book exemplifies "knowledge for action" in the sense that Chris Agyris used that term. The reader will pick up insights that are immediately useable and lay the groundwork for a powerful gestalt.

The authors focus on how all the puzzle pieces of the organization not only fit together but interrelate. The book is organized so the reader can focus on a particular area of interest, find just enough theory to prepare for a more practical examination, and read about real-world examples. The reader is not bogged down in theoretical details, and does not follow a recipe. Instead, he or she is given enough guidance and freedom to build up knowledge from a personal perspective.

Using a background of Elliott Jaques' stratification theory, the book examines how people interact with situations to accomplish work and produce results, why they succeed or fail, and how and why individual and organizational learning occur (or not).

The book is richly cross-referenced so the individual can examine a concept across topics, and it has an excellent index.

I highly recommend this book for any manager or student of management who is interested in learning organizations, strategy, personnel management, and knowledge management.

Systems Leadership: Creating Positive Organisations

Excellent read. Good balance between theory and practicality. The management approach proffered has successfully underpinned Rio Tinto's management system for more than a quarter century.

Whilst the book is based on Elliott Jaques' studies and theories, it is well tempered by the managerial experience of its authors. The book is annoted with numerous stories of Rio's implementation challenges, and the benefits so derived.

Not necessarily a "How To" book, but full of good management sense backed by conceptual frameworks.

A practical book for crearing effective leadership and culture

This book is well written based on the actual application of the concepts and principles in real businesses and not just a set of ideas cobbled together by consultants for a quick profit or because they seem like a good idea. The content of the book is well proven in practice and it works and the book helps in their learning very effectively.

Should be on every Pastor's shelf...

"Battered into Submission" blows away the myth that spousal abuse doesn't happen in Christian homes, or that it doesn't happen any more. Using statistical and anecdotal data, the authors reveal undeniably how spousal abuse is ubiquitous in the Christian landscape. They map the denominations and doctrinal groups in which a woman is most at risk of abuse.
Although the data relates to the 1970's the book remains relevant. Most importantly, it delineates how the most usual counselling received from Christian counsellers to women who have already suffered abuse, in fact tends to perpetuate the abusive situation. Pastors who believe "things have changed" would do well to measure their own performance against this analysis as a check up on whether they are unconscious contributors to perpetuating spousal abuse.
This book, or some other as unblinkingly willing to face the facts of pastoral complicity in spousal abuse, should be required reading for every Christian worker who purposes to provide pastoral care or counselling.

Read this book for a seminary class. I was really impressed. It looked at domestic abuse and gave responsible Christian answers. I would recommend this book to all pastors, theology students, and Christians alike. Excellent!

Helpful Scriptural Insight

Although it's been several years since I read this book, I do remember the insight it provided on an oft-quoted passage of scripture: Malachi 2:16. This passage, where God decrees that He hates divorce, has often been cited by many well-meaning Christians as a way of prohibiting divorce. Yet this book makes a strong case that there are situations beyond adultery that warrant divorce. While I do not remember the translation quoted, I do remember being startled by the complete set of verses: "I hate divorce, and I hate a man who clothes himself and his wife with violence."

The authors make a tremendous case for divorce in cases of abuse and abandonment. If memory serves correctly, they argue that abuse and abandonment in any area (emotional, physical, financial, etc.) violate and break the marriage vows.

I found this book extremely helpful when I was in an emotionally abusive marriage. My counselor at the time recommended it. Reading the authors' explanation shed a lot of light on my situation and ultimately helped me realize that how I was being treated was not God's plan for me.

In 1986, the Steger International Polar Expedition, comprised of seven men and one wom an, started for the pole with 3 tons of supplies, pulled by dogsled and human muscle; 55 days later, they reached the North Pole. North to the Pole is the story of not only those 55 days, but also of the planning and preparation that went into the expedition. It is also the story of the expedition members them selves and of the spirit and will power that drives people onward over terrain so treacherous that an entire day's march could cover as little as one and a half miles. That the spirit of adventure and human determination are alive and well is the message of this book. Feel the Cold

This book gives you a real feeling of what it's like to be in the Arctic, trying to reach the North Pole. The feeling of intense cold is particularly well rendered, by one who lived through it. Under conditions of intense cold, even the simplest action, such as attaching velcro strips of gloves to one another, takes so much "warm up" action and so much focused attention -- and if you fail, you've got to start all over again with running around in circles or jumping up and down in order to warm up your fingertips enough to allow you to perform small actions such as attaching velcro strips to one another. A very worthwhile read, even if you never intend to visit the Arctic under these conditions.

There are too few adventurers left. Will Serger and expedition crew chose to take on a challenge that few would dare or consider. preparation for such a challenge can only take you so far. One must be able to think on one's feet to overcome obstacles along the way. This book chronicles such feats. it is a good read for both the armchair adventurer and the wannabe adventurer.

Eve Caligor, M.D., is Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City. She is a Training and Supervising Analyst and Director of the Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Division at Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research in New York City.

Otto F. Kernberg, M.D., is Director of the Personality Disorders Institute at the New York Presbyterian Hospital, Westchester Division, and Professor of Psychiatry at the Joan and Sanford I. Weill Medical College and Graduate School of Medical Sciences of Cornell University, New York City. He is a Training and Supervising Analyst at the Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research and is a past president of the International Psychoanalytic Association.

John F. Clarkin, Ph.D., is Co-Director of the Personality Disorder Institute at New York Presbyterian Hospital, Westchester Division, and Clinical Professor of Psychology in Psychiatry at the Joan and Sanford I. Perfect book for students and for experts

As an educator who has spent 30 years working with trainees learning to do psychotherapy, and learning to apply complex models of the mind to clinical work of all kinds, I found this book to be a perfect guide. Dr. Caligor has done an amazing job of explaining how therapy works based on our understanding of how the mind works; she has also explained how students can operationalize this knowledge in the form of psychotherapy technique. The book is equally useful for students, and for experts, alike. Bravo!!!

This is a well written, insightful book. Humanistic and not judgmental about mental illness. Very educational. I enjoyed this book. Like a textbook to read but worth it. I highlighted many areas. An interesting way to break down hard to comprehend personalities.

Excellent guide to helping with rigid personality traits

As a psychiatrist who practices medication management, psychotherapy, and psychoanalysis, I think this book is a superb introduction to an object relations approach for psychotherapy. Although it is especially helpful for focusing on rigid personality traits, its clear descriptions of techniques and highly detailed clinical illustrations serve as a excellent introduction to psychotherapy in general. Also, the systematic approach to evaluating patients and discussing diagnosis and treatment options is extremely helpful, as is the adaptability of this treatment for use with medication and other psychotherapies. Highly recommended!

My new favourite yoga book

Im not sure there is more you can ask for from a single book. What initially caught my eye was the sheer number of poses. 2100 poses in a single book? To be honest having read other yoga books I didn't even know there was anything near 2100 yoga poses. Most other books stop at like 100-200. So I started flipping through the book. The pictures are clear, of high quality and extremely well organized. But this isn't just a photo book. Each picture has is described, has its name in Sanskrit and English and the part I like, it tells me which muscle groups are targeted. I might sound simple but if you do the poses, or at least attempt to, now I can get an idea if im doing it right. So that's when I decided I had to buy the book. There is a section detailing the limbs of yoga. A section that helps you with training to get into the more difficult poses. And this is what has jumped out to me in day 1, I can't wait to keep exploring the book and using it to help me grow my yoga practice.

Excellent encyclopedia of yoga

This is an excellent encyclopedia of yoga poses. Every pose has a brief description, a color photo and the name in the English and Sanskrit. All poses are in color using a variety of models, male and female, whose bodies seem to twist in amazing ways. The color photos are large and clear enough to see what is going on--and therefore can be followed. They are all set on a white background. There is an index in the back for both the English popular names and for the Sanskrit names also. Most of the popular names I looked up were there but I could not find a couple of them but I can understand how popular names could vary somewhat. The book is very easy to use and one can go through it and see what other possible poses are there. But before you purchase--think encyclopedia--it is very large and of course comprehensive and physically heavy--you won't be traveling with it. The price was very reasonable for a book of this quality and scale. For the dedicated yoga practitioner, this would be a particularly useful book and a very nice gift too.

The book is like an encyclopedia

I really loooooove this book! I'm a yoga teacher and sometimes I feel uninspired of what poses to teach, but book has so many varations of poses that I wouldn't have thought of myself! The book is like an encyclopedia; it's thick and solid! I was surprised at how many pages were in this book! I was contemplating buying the kindle version but I'm glad I bough the actual book because there's so much to see! And I personally think it's easier to have a physical book when it comes to "text book" style books; I usually keep kindle editions to stories or novels.
