The Kamoinge Photo collection is like a Symphony of light and heart...

Kudos for Kamoinge for publishing this outstanding volume in commemoration and celebration of their jubilee year.
The images in this masterful collection offer keen insight, historic perspective and powerful commentary, elegantly rendered, both representationally and expressionistically, by this group of articulate and talented photographers.
The impact of the photographs on this view is palpable. As I turn the pages of this well composed pictorial anthology I experience compassion, passion, outrage, indignation, inspiration, celebration, calm, hope, joy, respect and profound gratitude.
This great book is indeed timeless and I will revisit its pages innumerable times.

Good as a social biography; not so much photographically

This book is about an organization named Kamoinge—which means “people working together” in a Kenyan language—celebrating their 50th anniversary. This appears to be a collective of socially conscious photographers from several places in the world showing off their work.
In the forward it’s argued that photography can be thought of and enjoyed as music, which certainly has never occurred to me. One shot that stood out for me was of a little girl smirking into the camera, in a fancy lace dress, with sneakers marked “left” and “right.” On the other side of the world, there’s a photo in Dakar of a strangely shaped tree and a woman walking past it with the wind billowing her dress that seems very musical indeed.
After those shots comes a section of posters from gallery shows, featuring a history of the organization, followed by Founders’ Portfolios, most of which were difficult to understand; more like modern art painting than photography. Very few of them made any impression on me.
With its social aspect, you can’t expect huge technical prowess. Maybe I’ve been a photographer too long and I can’t get out of the way of that, but there were few photos here I liked.

This is a very large book. Makes for a great coffee table book. Photographs are black & white. Absolutely beautiful.

An Excellent Academic Judo Work

I have found no other Judo or martial arts work that approaches the academic level of this one in scholarship and completeness. Draeger and Ishikawa have been VERY thorough in their assessment of HOW to train for Judo, offering for the first time a catagorized breakdown of training techniques into four areas: Preparatory, supplementary, compound, and auxiliary. Training is approached for the first time in English, as a scientific undertaking which like many other sports, is based upon and helped by the study of kinesiology (study of movement, body & muscle, etc.). The authors don't simply tell us, they give us the "why" of things. Helpful diagrams and quality sequence photographs help convey the ideas, though I wouldn't recommend this volume for someone who doesn't have the patience to read. Training methods utilizing partners, weights, belt, equipment, and gravity are detailed. Originally printed in 1962, This recent re-release paperback edition is affordable and a welcome return. Don't let the age of publication dissuade you from learning from this volume, it was revolutionary upon its oroginal release, and little approaching its depth has been published in the popular press since. There is another terrific judo book by Draeger & Inokuma which I hope Tuttle will consider rereleasing again soon, called "Weight Training for Championship Judo", which goes even deeper into advanced sports theory. Judo was Draeger's first martial art, and I was surprised years ago to discover how deep and ground breaking his research with Kodokan colleagues had been. Altogether a superb volume.

classic training worthy of any library

I'm a big fan of classic training methods and of using a partner as resistance and this book is full of similarly great techniques. Many of these exercises can be adapted to practicioners of other arts. This is well worth the read for both it's strengthening techniques and it's text.

No Nonsense Training

Judging by the one and five star reviews below me this is a "love it or hate it" kind of book. I love it, while admitting its drawbacks.
Originally written in 1962 by trainers from the Kodokan in Tokyo, its purpose was to catalog the traditional calisthenic exercises of judo and promote the then-radical use of modern western free weights. Part one is theory, part two is practice.
The books only flaw is its age. Looking at the pictures, one feels like Jerry Seinfeld when Lloyd Bridges decided to whip him into shape: "It's like a fitness museum!" Some exercises are pictured employing such unfashionable devices as rubber expanders and one-piece barbells of the sort that circus strongmen always use. Scrupulously up-to-date people will no doubt find some of it pretty funny, and the looks one would get at the gym when doing, say, reverse running on all fours would be funnier still.
Never the less, the book is packed solid with explanations and photos of hundreds of damn good exercises and lots of fairly good training information, all of it presented from a perspective of what is useful for judo. If supplemented by some common sense and maybe a book on gym safety it is quite valuable.

A full time paediatrician will find this an invaluable addition to their collection. There is a superb index and I found it easy to use and almost without fail, I found what I needed quickly. Remember this book is now finely tuned and is in it’s 18th edition and has a fine heritage. It is a fine, modern, dynamic textbook that will serve it’s readership well.

The 18th edition of Nelson is horrifically overweight: difficult to handle and unwieldy and the reference ranges are gone. The 17th edition was a much better size.

Please authors/editors- a strict diet is required before any forthcoming editions... a general textbook is not meant to be exhaustive on every subject- there are specialty texts for that. So for goodness sakes, trim the fat next time round !

The Tome of Guitar Yoda. BUY THIS FIRST BEFORE ANY OTHER LEARNING GUITAR BOOK!

FORGET EVERYTHING ELSE - If you want to learn guitar, buy this book immediately, and start on the right foot. Forget trying to learn by ear or pick up a few things from this book or that book at Guitar Center; Bill Edwards does a wonderful Yoda-esque job of breaking down the fretboard and almost showing you the owner's manual for using the fretboard of a guitar. My mind was blown! It was like crawling around, bumping into things here and there in a dark room, only for a far more intelligent man to come in and turn on the lights. I could finally go from merely copying others, to actually understanding what I was playing and why.

Not for the beginning guitar student

I am certain this is an excellent book, however it is not for those just starting on the study of playing a guitar. There is some great information for beginners, but the book moves quickly into barre cords and then playing positions without explanation. If you already have some skills with your guitar, this is probably a great book and I will pick it back up at some point when I can benefit from the info within.

I am 63. I started to learn guitar 12 yrs ago. And while I have bought many how to play guitar books (about 2 1/2 foot stack of them) this is always the book that has been the most useful. I have gifted it to about 10 others that wanted to learn how to play. After I first started using it back in the beginning I introduced it to my college friend who had been playing since I knew him in college. But he'd been playing the same 10 to 20 songs for 30 yrs and not really moving forward. Within two yrs of getting this book and practicing along with me he was light years ahead of where he started out. I know I've made huge improvements by using the info in fret board logic.
