Not like the TV series but good.

I found the tv series first and loved it so I went looking for the books. The books have very little in common with the tv series, let me just say that right from the start. "Loosely based on" is the term that comes to mind. Not to say that that is a negative, it just is.

So I admit that I spent the first half of the book trying figure out how the events of the tv show would fit into the book. Once I just got over the fact that are completely different I started to enjoy the novel more. I'm not going to go into a list of how they are the same and different, just know that this is not a rehashing of the events of the tv show.

I will say that the character of Joanne's sister is missing and I really liked her.

I really really got into the series on TV and was super bummed when it was cancelled. I enjoy this type of genre and was hoping reading the books would be even better than the cancelled series. I had a hard time "getting into" the book. There was never a time I couldn't put the book down. It was kinda more, let's see where this is going now. Not a bad read, just not exactly what I was hoping for. I bought the first and second book in a set so I will read the second one and see what happens...

I purchased this book because I love the show

I purchased this book because I love the show, and I was excited about the possibility of spending more time inside the characters' heads, learning more of their back story. Disappointing doesn't even begin to cover this book. Vapid, shallow, poorly constructed; these are the only words I can use to describe this book and its sequels. The characters, despite being immortals (with all their memories, might I add) are stupid, impulsive, childish (Joanna is literally hysterical, it makes my teeth itch), and we are given little insight into their nonsensical decisions. Things happen suddenly, for no reason, and just as suddenly are forgotten. There is no depth, no warmth, no consideration of who they truly are.

She seems content to constantly wait, and the pacing suffers for it. Also, the many repetitive scenes add nothing new to drive the story forward. This title will find its audience, but the lack of balanced structure and action makes it less gripping than most sci-fi works. The Unquiet

“There may be two versions of everything, but only one can stay. Only one reflection is real.”

This was an interesting of a YA sci-fi story, with a bit of a sad ending.

Lirael had a rough life in this story, not only was she thrust into a life that she didn’t want, but she was forced to kill, and forced to act like it didn’t bother her. Even having friends put her in a difficult position, to the point where being alone was her only defence.

“By the time they realise that our sleeper program is in effect, that we are coming to take over their world, it will be too late.”

The storyline in this was split into three; Lirael’s time at the cottage, her time as a sleeper, and the time when things changed. The story really was quite different between these three sections, and showed three very different times in Lirael’s life.
There was a little bit of romance in this, but only a very little bit.

“Close your eyes and pretend you’re somewhere else, okay?”

The ending to this was really sad, and I actually found myself crying. I found the pace of the story to be quite slow, but the emotional ending made up for it a bit, although I really wish things could have been different for Lirael.

Loved the concept, but the story was just okay.

The Unquiet is one of those books that has a really interesting concept, but I felt like it wasn’t really executed well. I loved the idea of the book. The idea of every person having a double and that double training to take over the other’s life, but it just life me bored and sometimes confused.

Part of the reason I didn’t like this book is the main character. I just didn’t really connect with or like her, at all. She is trained to be the exact copy of the other Lirael. She is trained to assassinate the other Lirael and take her place. I found her to be really flat. She is training to be this other person, so I felt like we didn’t get enough of who she actually was.

I found the concept interesting, but really complicated. Sometimes it felt like I was reading a few different stories at the same time. Overall, I appreciated the concept, but didn’t really like the story as a whole.

A story to slowly sink into

Lirael was taken as a child to be trained to eventually kill and replace her duplicate on a different Earth. The Sleepers are intent on being the ones not to disappear from the Earths, and she is one of the soldiers in their plan. But when Lira arrives at her new home, she will discover that not everything is what it seems, and sometimes being the perfect solider doesn’t equate to real happiness.

THE UNQUIET has one of the most unique premises and protagonists that I’ve ever read. I love how the author creates the idea of two parallel Earths and the consequences that might happen when you have two of everything. Lira is one of my favorite protagonists, and she has phenomenal development. She’s a dark character, often cold, and there’s a seriousness to her that shows a quiet ferocity. She doesn’t know how to connect with people well because of the environment she was trained in, yet even she can’t help a few people carving a place for themselves in her heart.

Though the romance is a minor part of the story, I couldn’t help falling head over heels for it. It’s slow, sometimes sad, but very powerful and sincere. I hoped for the best for them every step of the way. Their relationship, even before it becomes romantic, is kind of about choosing your own family when you have none of your own or when your family isn’t really a family.

The action can be a little slow at times, but it’s well worth it. Every plot point is intricately built up, laying all the necessary steps before the next big action. By the time readers get to the end, they are sure to have a book hangover they won’t forget.

Mikaela Everett tells a magnificent story of emotion, strength, and internal battles in THE UNQUIET. This is a story to sink into slowly and to leave with a new but not uncomfortable heaviness of having read a really good and deep novel.

Are you kidding me right now? That was it? Really?!

There was literally no story, none. All this book is is a glorified fanfiction that did not need to become an entire book. While it may try to fool you with talk of a land in eternal darkness and a hidden queen, nothing is ever built on this. We get the bare bones of a setup and then the rest of the book is just a horrifyingly unrealistic love story. We also get no character development, only making this story that much harder to get into. Who are these characters? Why are they doing the things they’re doing? And don’t even get me started on the actual “romance”; I will probably be forever scared by some of those descriptions. *shutters*

There was no originality, leading to cookie-cutter stereotypical scenarios that I don’t expect to see in this level of writing. I was expecting to be immersed in cool new world and was largely disappointed with what I got instead. Honestly, if I hadn’t been listening to it I probably would have never gotten to the end (thank you fast forward!). There were some elements that I think could have made this book a lot better if only they had gotten more time to fully develop. However, there are just too many problems making >i>Reign of Shadows>/i< the first book I have ever given a failing grade.

Plot: Imagine a world of eternal night. It sucks that you can't see and plants are dying, but there are little ground-demons that will pick your bones in seconds. You want to read this one now, don't you? Reign of Shadows drew me in from the first chapter where we are introduced to a lonely princess in a tower. Like most YA novels, she was spirited away from an evil usurper and must be kept alive at all costs.

Admittedly, Reign of Shadows is a slower paced novel. It takes place over various landscapes, but not a lot of "big" action happens in these 300 pages. As a reader who prefers slower paced novels, I enjoyed it as it gave me a chance to assess the situation and get to know new characters. That being said, the ending was one of the most abrupt cliffhangers I have ever read. Ever. It's one of those cliffhangers where you turn the page and expect a new chapter...but it's the acknowledgments. It seemed odd to have such an ending when the overall pacing of the story was slower.

Characters: At first, Luna annoyed me. Her language was overly formal and she fit the "Rapunzel formula" (sheltered girl leaves her tower for the first time) to a T. Over time, I respected her decisions along with her inner and outer strength.

One of Jordan's strengths is writing characters that stick with you. Regardless of how much "screen time" these characters get, I always felt involved with the story and that I knew their background. A lot of characters are only present for a handful of chapters, but their interactions made Reign of Shadows feel more like an epic journey.

As you would expect from Sophie Jordan, there is a romance that will have you fully engaged. I enjoyed the slow build and watching these two characters come together.

Worldbuilding: You don't need me to tell you that the world building in Reign of Shadows is immaculate. There are repercussions from the eternal darkness and a society that has made do with such terrible conditions. Animals have evolved to give themselves a fighting chance in this dark world, like tree wolves. Wolves that can climb...trees.

The actual night-time monsters were a bit odd. I know that they're supposed to be these fearsome creatures, but their descriptions were just laughable and didn't really strike me with fair.

Short N Sweet: Reign of Shadows is a great start for a series I need! Sophie Jordan writes magic and will reel you in until you get hooked!

This well-written textbook is an introduction to the theory of discrete wavelet transform (DWT) and its applications in digital signal and image processing. The DWT is presented by the author from a digital signal processing point of view. This book is mainly written for broad readership of graduate students and researchers in physics, computer science, and engineering with special interest in digital signal and image processing. The author demonstrates clearly the properties of the DWT by numerous examples and figures. All computations can be realized by MATLAB programs available at the website of this book.

The contents of this textbook is divided into three parts. The first part (with Chapters 2 – 7) has preliminary character and presents the essentials of digital signal processing (such as operations of discrete signals, convolution and correlation, Fourier analysis of discrete signals, z-transforms of discrete signals, finite impulse response (FIR) filters, and multirate digital signal processing).

The core of the book is the second part (with Chapters 8 – 14) which presents the theory of the DWT and some extended wavelet transforms. Since most of the concepts of the DWT are easy to understand by studying the Haar DWT, the author describes the Haar DWT first. Then some orthogonal DWT’s (such as Daubechies filters of length 4 and Coiflet filters of length 6) are designed. The often used biorthogonal DWT’s are presented too. Some implementation aspects of the DWT using typical filters are discussed. As extensions of DWT the author describes the discrete wavelet packet transform, discrete stationary wavelet transform, and dual-tree DWT. The dual-tree DWT provides good directional selectivity and is nearly shift-invariant.

In the last part (with Chapters 15 – 16), two of the major applications of the DWT are presented. The image compression of digital images (with short description of the image compression standard JPEG 2000) and signal denoising are examined.

Each chapter ends with a short summary and many exercises. Answers of selected exercises are given too. Doubtless, this nice book will stimulate the practical education in the theory of DWT and its applications.
