Not impressed heretofore

I read The Templar Legacy over a decade ago and I have eagerly awaited each new Cotton Malone book since. I preordered this book nearly four months ago. I am currently about 30% into this book and I'm not impressed. With other CM books I would read for hours until my eyes watered. They were proverbial page turners. Not so much yet with this point. I have had to put the book down several times. It had been my impression that Mr. Berry was a thorough and dedicated researcher. The style and tone of this book almost sems like it was written by someone else. Some passages feel like they were taken from Wikipedia, a few words deleted or moved and put into the book.
I refer to the books description of a Soviet RA-115 (suitcase nukes). The definition given in the book on page 55 (Kindle) says,

An RA-115 "..."is engineered to last for years, so long as it's wired to a power source. In case of a loss of power, a battery backup is provided. If the battery runs low, the weapon had a transmitter that sends a coded message by satellite to a Russian embassy or consulate"

The Wikipedia entry on the RA-115 says,

"They can last for many years if wired to an electric source. In case there is a loss of power, there is a battery backup. If the battery runs low, the weapon has a transmitter that sends a coded message either by satellite or directly to a GRU post at a Russian embassy or consulate.

The passages are nearly identical. Is Mr. Berry using a ghostwriter?

I thoroughly enjoyed this book

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I own all of Steve Berry's books. This one is my favorite by far. Having grown up in Erie County New York there was always talk of Canada becoming part of the US. This is a must read book. The 20th Amendment is thoroughly explained. It is interesting who becomes president if something happens to the President. It is true that on the evening of the State of the Union one of the cabinet members will not be there. That person is the person who will be the next president if something happens to the President Vice-President and the other cabinet members. Great read. I hope who ever reads this book will thoroughly enjoy it as much as I have. I forgot another important part of the book. The storyline centers around Benjamin Tallmadge's journal and the Society of Cincinnati. I wanted to learn more about the Society of Cincinnati but couldn't find any information. I did down load Benjamin Tallmadge's memoir that he left for his son. Benjamin Tallmadge was the spymaster for George Washington and the Culper Ring. A lot of research went into this book. Best of Steve Berry yet.

I enjoy the historical stimulation

Steve Berry gets us involved with these secrets of our nation that never fully evolved into movements. They still have adherents not only from our past but from the world's past. In this novel, he blends secrets from the Soviet Union with the present far-flung intelligence network of the US. The result keeps us in our seats to find out each intricate step in the development of the fascinating moves of Cotton Malone and his colleagues. In the midst of the action, Berry continues to educate us about our own history and the ongoing need for vigilance. I enjoy the historical stimulation, the ongoing action, portrayal of the emotions and entanglements of his main character. I leave the book behind looking forward to Berry's next creation.

Heartbreakingly real.

After reading about the Halifax explosion in another book, I wanted to know more about it and I knew I had this book so I hunted it up. And I was not disappointed. Sally Walker has done a great job of telling the story of this tragic event that occurred almost 100 years ago and left it's mark on so many. Walker begins by giving a brief history of both Halifax itself and World War I, knowledge of which is helpful in understanding the disaster itself. After all, it was because of World War I that an ship full of ammunition entered the Halifax Harbor in the first place. The second chapter of the book takes a look at the two ships at the heart of the accident, describing the ships themselves, where they were coming from, and whose command they were under. Chapter three looks at some of the families living in the disaster zone and their circumstances before the explosion, giving the disaster a more human face. Stories like this make the events seem all the more real. Chapter four gives the details about how the accident occurred as far as it is known. Even as I read this chapter, I couldn't help wishing that someone, anyone, would make a different decision that would alter events, despite knowing this wouldn't happen. It was interesting to read in the author's acknowledgements that she felt the same way as she wrote the book. It's impossible to read this book without feeling a little sick at heart at the tragic nature of the whole thing, and heartsick for the families that lost so much.

Chapter five gives the locations and activities for the families included in chapter three just as the explosion occurred. Chapter six describes the explosion itself and the incredible devastation that occurred. This was the hardest chapter for me to read. Up until the dropping of the atomic bomb at the end of World War II, this explosion was the worst such man-caused disaster to ever have occurred. The photographs included throughout the book add a great deal to making the realities of the tragedy that much more real. The pictures of streets completely flattened is rather shocking. Chapter seven looks at the human cost of the disaster as Walker shares what happened to the families mentioned earlier. Chapter eight offers hope as I read about the incredible response of those who wanted to help, as doctors, nurses, rescuers, and tons of supplies were sent to the suffering community. Chapter nine looks at the incredible amount of work that continued through a couple of nasty blizzards as people continued to look for the dead and injured, setting up many temporary hospitals and a temporary morgue. Reading about devastated families having to identify their dead relatives was heartbreaking. And chapters eleven and twelve look at the days, weeks, months, and years after the disaster and the rebuilding and recovery efforts as well as the impact on various families and their descendants. Walker has created a thoroughly readable and heart-wrenching account of an event that still resonates today. A powerful historical record of both heartbreak and resiliency that needs to be remembered.

My husband and I are planning a vacation to Nova Scotia and I have been trying to learn all I can about Nova Scotia before we go. Thus I found this book. I know it is a child's book but it did a good job educating me on something that I knew nothing about. Glad I bought it.

Dated Yet Timely

On first sight A Very British Coup seems impossibly old fashioned, dealing as it does with a left wing British Prime Minister who believes in public ownership, non alignment, and a non-nuclear strategy. He borrows money from the Soviet Union and tells the United States to take its bases out of Britain. As a result right wing elements in Britain, with ample assistance from the US government, do all they can to sabotage his government and force him out of power.
So why watch this now, more than ten years after the end of the Cold War, during a British Labour government that sometimes seems more Thatcherite than Maggie herself? Well, first its a dynamic political thriller with tension that lasts right up until the final, rather equivocal moments. Secondly, it asks some difficult questions about the nature of democracy and the relationship of power and privilege. Thirdly, I think for us American viewers it provides an eye-opening look at how the rest of the world sees us, and its not all that flattering. (Most of the American officials look like prize fighters and bully boys, which is what they turn out to be in the end. The Ugly American indeed!)
The DVD version doesn't have many extra features, just some filmographies of the principal stars and an audio interview with the author, Chris Mullin M.P. This seems to have been originally broadcast on radio and is rather scratchy, but you can hear Big Ben in the distance, which is a nice touch. So I recommend this DVD for political junkies, Anglophiles,and any Americans concerned about our international reputation.

Possibly the best political intrigue video ever made.

I first saw this video on public television about 10 years ago - I was amazed. I still find it exciting and flawless even though true socialistic ideology is outdated. I liked it so much that I actually paid [the money] for the 3 part video (two cassettes) when it was first released.
I've also read the book by Chris Mullin but found the video to be superior; Harry Perkins is a more witty and affable character.
A correction to the previous review by Mr. Daley: Ray McAnally WAS cast in at least two Hollywood movies; One of them being "My Left Foot" with Daniel Day Lewis. Ray McAnally was an excellent actor, just starting to reach a peak in his career. I was sorry to hear that he died.

Frighteningly up to date

Picture if you will a Prime Minister of England who really wants to benefit the majority of the people and not only the "fat cats" who have run the country all through its past. Picture how his foes--not only the powerful but those of the middle class in the pockets of the powerful--would stop at nothing to topple him, not even short of murder. Picture also how a certain even more powerful nation would aid and abet in his downfall since while all the rest talk disarmament he actually begins to disarm!
If you have trouble picturing all this, then you must watch the Acorn Media release of the first Masterpiece Theatre presentation that did not take place in the British past or present but in the very near future. Favorite course I took in college. (Taken directly from the author, Dr. Peter Stanwick)
I needed the cash when the course was over, so I sold it back to the local bookstore, but it was cheapest here on Amazon and it is an easy read.

Very interesting and he is supposed to have a newer edition come out that I will purchase as well!
