About the Author
Elliot W. Eisner is professor emeritus of education and art at Stanford University. He has taught at Stanford since 1965 where he is best known for his scholarship in three fields: arts education, curriculum studies, and educational evaluation. His research interests focus on the development of aesthetic intelligence and the use of critical methods from the arts in studying and improving educational practice. Dr. Eisner has lectured throughout the world and has published more than 17 books, including "The Enlightened Eye: Qualitative Inquiry" and the "Enhancement of Educational Practice, " which explores the uses of critical methods from the arts in studying and describing schools, classrooms, and teaching processes. Dr. Eisner is the recipient of numerous awards for his work, including the 2005 Grawemeyer Award, the Palmer O. Johnson Memorial Award from the American Educational Research Association, a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship, and a Fulbright Fellowship. Professor Eisner has served as president of the American Educational Research Association, the National Art Education Association, and the International Society for Education through Art, and the Jogn Dewey Society.

Review of Eisner's THe Educational Imagination

This is a curriculum-based book that I am using at the graduate level for a program evaluation course. Although it does not have much use for program evaluation unless the program is curriculum, Eisner is a renowned expert on curriculum foundations and evaluation. Although somewhat dated in light of the current standards movement, Eisner does discuss the implications of curriculum revision and leadership in relationship to Goals 2000, which was emerging as the book was published. Although not a "page turner," The Educational Imagination is a useful resource for curriculum leadership.

Too expensive.

I have used this text for several years for graduate students in education. Eisner is a very thoughtful writer and students often find him inspiring, although there are always those who find him long-winded. However, this summer when I saw the price I decided this would be the last time I'd use it. $79. incl tax! That's ridiculous. At this rate, the college textbook market will surely become obsolete. It's a shame.

This is presented as part of a broader examination of the function of heritage in late modern societies, with a particular focus on the changes which have resulted from the globalisation of heritage during the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries.

Developing new theoretical approaches and innovative models for more dialogically democratic heritage decision making processes, Heritage: Critical Approaches unravels the relationship between heritage and the experience of late modernity, whilst reorienting heritage so that it might be more productively connected with other pressing social, economic, political and environmental issues of our time.

Overcoming anxiety

Anxiety is a mentally crippling disorder, it can hold you back from many opportunities. I have social anxiety, I cannot count the amount of networking parties and other important events I have missed because the thought of being around so many persons made me afraid. One of the problems that persons with anxiety face is lack of confidence and sometimes the only way to build confidence is by self-affirmations and trying to become more social. In some cases, meditation is also helpful to curb anxiety. It is comforting to realize that the author has been through and ultimately conquered his anxiety disorders and his now sharing his strategies in this book.

I am so thankful to have found this book! I have dealt with a lot of social anxiety and self esteem problems in my past. I am the type of person who thinks a lot. Many times I've been told that my problem is just that I think too much.

This book encourages you to think, but to think more logically and more positively. It makes you aware of thought/emotion cycles that are harmful and that are not true. It walks you through changing these.

Again, SO grateful for this book. I have bought several copies to give to friends who deal with the same kind of thing. I highly recommend it.

Completely worth the read!

I have really poor social skills as I'm anxious talking to a large group of people and is even afraid raising my own opinion. As I'm in the journey of self-improvement, this book has given me lots of information and advice on how to communicate better and become more assertive. The simple and effective techniques help me on how to boost self-confidence and some starting points for freeing myself from social anxiety. The best self-help book I've read so far. I definitely recommend it to people struggling with social anxiety disorder. Completely worth the read!

Examine the table of contents...

The main reason I bought the book is that I wanted to learn the basics of system administration-type stuff common to Unix and Linux. If that's what you want to learn, this ISN'T the book you want. The only parts of this book good for that purpose, along those lines, are about five chapters and appendixes (out of 28). If you want to learn to use the X Windows system (overlayed with GNOME or KDE) to make and use a Linux machine for purposes similar to those you'd use a Windows workstation, then this book's for you. However, I doubt most people who want to get deep into Linux really need a zillion chapters about GNOME. I mean, heck--if you want it and can install it, you are probably smart enough not to need a Dummies book to figure out basic productivity software.
I bought this book and used it to install Linux on Gateway Solo 1150 laptop. At first I partitioned the hard drive, but the book assumes you aren't going to use a partition, and the installation (and use of the book) will probably go most smoothly if you have a spare hard drive on a regular desktop workstation. There weren't detailed instructions for the special case of someone wanting to partition a hard drive on a laptop, and there was a serious problem (possibly just a problem with the CD) installing the X Windows system.
Also, the jokes were sometimes a little strained...

Awesome Book, good for newbies...

Red Hat Linux for Dummies 7.0 is a great book for those users who wish to learn Linux. Linux is a great operating system, extremely stable when compared to Windows.
The book goes from the install process, interent configuration, and even some bash shell scripting. The book covers the topics fully and is rich in detail. As for being a Server Administrator for EchoShell(we run FreeBSD) for a couple months now, I even learned some new commands and features of Linux.
I do favor FreeBSD over Linux, but Linux is great for people who want to get into the alternative operating system world. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn the world of Linux. The book has just enough to get you started and teaches you the basic functionality of the Red Hat Linux Operating System.

Great for home office linux use!

I'd recommend this book for anyone who wants to install Linux for the first time, as well as set up dial-up web access and e-mail, a printer, word processor, database, spreadsheet, presentation and appointment software (Star Office) without paying hundreds of dollars for it. Very readable and good selection of information. A good complement is Linux Networking For Your Office by Roderick Smith, once you know the basics of Linux and want to set up a network to share files.
This book would have gotten 5 stars if not for one bad omission... it doesn't say enough about dual-boot installations. in particular, it doesn't tell you that if you're installing Linux as a second operating system with Windows NT or 2000, installing LILO in your Master Boot Record will make Windows inaccessible. Since the instalation chapter does talk about non-destructive partitioning (which most people will only do for a dual boot system with windows) this caution should have been mentioned somewhere to keep beginners from making this mistake and losing their Windows partition.
