For example, if you do not understand the basic ideas of investment, you may find it impossible to achieve your financial goals. If you do not have at least a rudimentary understanding of set theory, you may not be able to meaningfully interpret the vast amount of survey data we are presented with almost daily.

This book has been written so that you can learn about the power of mathematics directly from its pages. All concepts are carefully explained, important definitions and procedures are set off in boxes, and worked-out examples that present solutions in a step-by-step manner appear in every section. Study tip boxes offer hints and suggestions and often point out common errors to avoid. A great deal of attention has been given to show ways to apply mathematics to your life in order to make your learning experience both interesting and relevant.

As you begin your studies, I would like to offer some specific suggestions for using this book and for being successful in this course:

1. Attend all lectures. No book is intended to be a substitute for valuable insights and interactions that occur in the classroom. In addition to arriving for lecture on time and prepared, you will find it useful to read the section before it is covered in lecture. Thinking Mathematically provides a general survey of mathematical topics that are useful in our contemporary world. My primary purpose in writing the book was to show students how mathematics can be applied to their lives in interesting, enjoyable, and meaningful ways. The book's variety of topics and flexibility of sequence make it appropriate for a one- or two-term course in liberal arts mathematics, finite mathematics, mathematics for education majors, as well as for courses specifically designed to meet state-mandated requirements in mathematics.

I wrote the book with three major goals: first, to help students acquire knowledge of fundamental mathematics; second, to show students how mathematics can solve authentic problems that apply to their lives; and third, to enable students to develop problem-solving skills, fostering critical thinking, within a varied, interesting, and contemporary setting.

I am avidly interested in psychology, philosophy, and literature, as well as mathematics. I've worked as a musician, psychotherapist, and even attempted book, music, and lyrics to an original musical. (Compared to writing for musical theater, authoring mathematics textbooks is a breeze!) About the Author
BOB BLITZER is a native of Manhattan and received a Bachelor of Arts degree with dual majors in mathematics and psychology (minor: English literature) from the City College of New York. His unusual combination of academic interests led him towards a Master of Arts in mathematics from the University of Miami and a doctorate in behavioral sciences from Nova University. Bob is most energized by teaching mathematics and has taught a variety of mathematics courses at Miami-Dade Community College for nearly 30 years. He has received numerous teaching awards, including Innovator of the Year from the League for Innovations in the Community College, and was among the first group of recipients at Miami-Dade for an endowed chair based on excellence in the classroom. In addition to Thinking Mathematically, Bob has written four algebra books, all published by Prentice Hall.

Thinking Mathematically (5th Ed.) - An Unbiased Review

can't work math. It scares me to death. I was one of the unfortunate people who, as a child, was taught math using the "New Moden Math Concept". Subsequently, like most who had the misfortune of suffering the course of instruction, the basics were sort of skipped over while we all learned "Base 108", "Base Pi" Base Chevrolet", and all the other crud we'd never use in the real world. As a result I am, therefore, mathematically illiterate.

I have needed one (1) course to complete my degree. I have been avoiding this course for years. Yep, it's basic college mathematics. The thought of math makes me sweat, nauseous, and causes massive amounts of burning stomach acid. I decided to take the plunge and signed up for a distant learning math class. The course required Dr. Robert Blitzers book, "Thinking Mathematically - 5th Edition".

I am now on chapter 4 and am learning math! I have put away the bottles of Malox and the sweat bands. I actually understand what I am reading. This book is great! My first homework assignments have been graded far better than I had ever hoped for. It is working for me. (At least the first 4 chapters anyway)

Dr. Blitzers' book utilizes every day situations as related to math. This makes it easier to understand for the non-math major. The book is loaded with examples and work problems the answers to which, are in the back of the book. You cannot just use the answers, you will have to work for them in order to learn. However, having the answers accessible makes it easy to review and find where you have errored (if at all).

Although the book is pricey, it is well worth the money. The book is absolutley loaded with information, is large, and is over 1,000 pages in length. It is well written and if I can understand it, anyone can. (Sometimes I have to reread the info before it sinks in...but it does!) I would suggest this book for anyone who wants to refresh their math skills not just students taking a college level math course.

Don't get me wrong, I am still having to work twice as hard as the person who has a working grasp of math, but I am finally learning the math concepts I should have 40 years ago. I thank Dr. Robert Blitzer and his book "Thinking Mathematically" for putting me at ease while I am doing so.

The book was in good condition nothing majorly wrong.
All though if your taking this class online you don't really need the book. The book really was only there so I could write chapter notes however the book online would have worked great. The homework and the online book is all you need, unless you really need a physical copy.

Exposing the Billionaire {Part 1}

This book captured me before I even finished this first episode - and that's why I bought the next two and lined them up on my carousel before I even began this review. Sophie is an investigative reporter, determined to out the scumbags who sell dangerous products to the public. Julian is a multi-billionaire who owns one such corporation. Maybe he knows about the possible danger, maybe he doesn't. Either way he and Sophie meet and the die is cast. They belong together - or do they? Not if he's a liar. Serious stuff, I know, but it's also a romantic comedy as well. Warning: each episode ends in a cliffhanger. My suggestion: get the first one and see if it charms you as it did me. It's a winner.

Anxiety Sucks

Living with anxiety is, plainly put, no fun. Your brain is constantly vigilant, looking for threats that only exist almost exclusively in your mind. While I've learned that there's no magic-bullet cure for anxiety, I'm always on the lookout for materials that will offer a bit of fresh perspectives and strategies. Gave me a positive mindset

I suffer from a lot of phobias so i thought id try this book as id been recommended, the book helped me quite a bit actually, and have learned to realise that fear is mostly in the mind.

Even if you don't have loads of phobias it's still an interesting read.

The book pretty much breaks down how fears form, where they come from, and gives you specific ways to overcome your own fears. Great deal of info for only a few bucks! Worth it.

About the Author
John J. Ruszkiewicz is a professor at the University of Texas at Austin where he has taught literature, rhetoric, and writing for more than thirty-five years. A winner of the President’s Associates Teaching Excellence Award, he was instrumental in creating the Department of Rhetoric and Writing in 1993 and directed the unit from 2001-05. He has also served as president of the Conference of College Teachers of English (CCTE) of Texas, which gave him its Frances Hern�ndez Teacher—Scholar Award in 2012. For Bedford/St. Martin's, he is coauthor, with Andrea Lunsford, of Everything’s An Argument (6th edition, 2013), and the author of　How To Write Anything (2nd edition 2012) and A Reader's Guide to College Writing (2014).

Nearly forgotten after her death in 1970, Haushofer began to attract attention again when this novel was republished in the 1980s. Although it is described by the publisher as "a startling redefinition of ecofeminist utopian fiction," this first-person narrative has been characterized by most commentators as dystopian. It tells of a woman vacationing in a remote mountain hunting lodge who survives an unexplained catastrophe in which (almost) all the rest of the human world perishes. Imprisoned on the mountainside by an invisible wall, the unnamed narrator recounts her struggle to survive and her attempt to discover the essence of her own personality, femininity, and humanity. The minimalist plot is enhanced by rich description and wise insight, and the translation succeeds in capturing the author's fluid, lyrical style. Recommended for general readers.

Originally published in German in 1962 and touted more recently as a feminist's Robinson Crusoe, this somber classic from prize-winner Haushofer chronicles the experiences of a (nameless) woman cut off from her familiar city ways in a remote hunting lodge, after Armageddon has snuffed out all life in the world beyond. With the woman's diary of activities during the first two years of isolation as foundation, the story assumes the shape and flavor of a journal. Saved from instant death by a transparent, apparently indestructible wall enclosing a substantial area of forest and alpine meadow, the woman finds relief from her isolation in companionship offered by a dog, a cat, kittens, and a cow and her calf, making them into a family that she cares for faithfully and frets over incessantly with each season's new challenges. Crops of potatoes, beans, and hay are harvested in sufficient quantity to keep all alive, with deer providing occasional meat for the table, but the satisfaction of having survived long winters and a halcyon summer is undone by a second sudden and equally devastating catastrophe, which triggers the need in her to tell her story. Although heavy with the repetition of daily chores, the account is also intensely introspective, probing as deeply into the psyche of the woman as it does into her world, which circumstances have placed in a new light. Subtly surreal, by turns claustrophobic and exhilarating, fixated with almost religious fervor on banal detail, this is a disturbing yet rewarding tale in which survival and femininity are strikingly merged. Thirty years after its acclaimed publication in Europe and twenty-two years after the author's death, The Wall has finally been published in the United States. This novel is narrated by a woman with no need for a name, who, while in the countryside, awakens to find an invisible, impenetrable wall surrounding the fields. She believes the wall is the result of a government experiment and that she is the last person alive. In time the wall becomes "a thing that is neither dead nor alive, it really doesn't concern me..." With her are a dog, a cow, and a pregnant cat, who become her family. Her interactions with this family and her philosophical musings make this an extraordinary work. As the number of matches for lighting fires dwindles, she wonders how we got so removed from the basics of life and realizes she "had forgotten how to see things with my own eyes,...but loneliness led me, in moments free of memory and consciousness, to see the great brilliance of life again." Though she is content with her family in her unique garden of Eden, the reader knows changes will occur. My Favorite of ALL TIME Book

Years ago I was looking for a "fiction" book to read, after having read so many self-help type books and I came across The Wall. I had no idea what a fabulous read I was in for on that day. I was drawn into the story in a way that is difficult to describe. I truly felt that I was there experiencing every single moment. The pictures were drawn so deftly, my mind came alive! One minute it was all peaceful and calm, and the next minute there was a horror and a fright -- then this was followed by a resolve and an inner strength. This is a most beautiful "woman's" story - to me. I read this book in the 80's, and in all that time, I have been looking for it again - as I must have given it out for another to read and never got it back. The Wall has haunted my life since -- and today I waded through 100's of titles trying one more time to find the book and there it was..... Any book that can stay with a person for 15 or more years, has to be a book that touches a true place. Brava!

On my all time top 10 list

I read The Wall because it was assigned to me as part of a German Women Writers in Translation course. Wait... don't stop reading, quite yet... I had reservations about the novel when I first started it, because I thought it would either be dull and boring, or it would be too much like science fiction/fantasy or a nature novel, two genres I don't enjoy most of the time. It is neither.
This novel is actually a portrait of courage. As others have said, the unnamed author finds that she is the last person left after a nuclear holocaust. She is protected by an invisible shield and must learn to survive on her own.
The woman copes by writing a diary of her situation. She tell us, on the first page: "I'm not writing for the sheer joy of writing; so many things have happened to me that I must write if I am not to lose my reason."
The narrator comes across as very honest and the story is very moving. As she writes, "I can't think who I should lie to today. I can allow myself to write the truth; all the people for whom I have lied throughout my life are dead."
There are wonderful passages throughout the novel; my book is covered in highlighter pen because so many lines stood out. The process the author goes through to come to terms with what has happened and survive is realistic and gripping. The portrait of nature is quite captivating.
Overall, this novel has an important message about what it means to be human. It speaks to the need to work for peace; to come together to avoid creating a situation where this novel could actually take place. It is an important work that I believe everyone who is concerned for the future of our planet should read. You will be moved and you will be changed by this book.

A Haunting Book

This book is about my biggest dream and my worst nightmare... living in the mountains with beautiful alpine meadows AND losing every single person I have loved in my life. I was mezmorized as the author described the nameless woman's reactions to the Wall. She was a somewhat pampered, middle-class, middle-aged woman whom had only recently learned to drive and suddenly found herself in a bizarre and frightening situation. She was on holiday with her cousin and cousin's husband at their hunting lodge in the Austrian mountains. After waking to discover they had not returned from an evening in the village she decided to walk down to the village to look for them. As she rounded a corner she literally ran into a wall.."a smooth, cool resistance where there could be nothing but air". She could see everything that had once been alive was now dead on the other side of the wall and could only surmise that she was the sole survivor of a military experiment gone bad. The rest of the book is her attempt to make sense of what has happened and to make a life for herself with just a few animals for companionship. This is one of the most unique books I have read.

Microsoft's .NET is a revolutionary advance in programming technology that greatly simplifies application development. In addition to providing support for traditional desktop Windows applications, it provides tremendous support for Web-based services.

Microsoft's popular Visual Basic programming language has been upgraded to take advantage of the new .NET features. Visual Basic.NET, or simply VB.NET, has become a full object-oriented programming language with capabilities comparable to C++, Java, and Microsoft's new language C# (pronounced "C sharp").

This book is a practical introduction to programming in VB.NET and using services provided by .NET. It emphasizes the VB.NET language and is part of The Integrated .NET Series from Object Innovations and Prentice Hall PTR.

An important thrust of this book is to teach VB.NET programming from an object-oriented perspective. This book introduces object-oriented concepts early and includes a case study on object-oriented programming. The book is intended to be fully accessible to programmers who do not already have a background in object-oriented programming. Previous knowledge of Visual Basic is not essential.

The book may also be read by more experienced programmers who desire a simple introduction to VB.NET with many example programs. Although designed for working professionals, the book includes enough detail, careful explanations, and sample programs so that it can be useful as a college textbook.

VB.NET is now a fully object-oriented language. It supports classes, interfaces, interface and implementation inheritance, and polymorphism. It is also highly integrated with the .NET Framework. These features make VB.NET a compelling language for developing object-oriented and component-based systems. This book provides thorough coverage of all these features.

One of the strengths of Visual Basic, and the reason it has enjoyed such widespread use, is the ease with which Windows application can be developed. Microsoft has revamped the way that Windows applications are built under .NET. Windows Forms, used by .NET languages, represents a class library that brings uniformity to the components of a Windows application. The book includes substantial coverage of using Windows Forms in VB.NET.

VB.NET, as a language, is elegant and powerful. However, to fully utilize its capabilities, you must have a good understanding of how it works with the .NET Framework. Organization of This Book

This book is organized into five major parts and is structured to make it easy for you to isolate what you most need to know.

Part 1, which everyone should read, begins with an introduction to the .NET Framework. The second chapter provides a short introduction to hands-on programming using VB.NET, so that you can start writing code on .NET right away. The third chapter introduces Visual Studio.NET. It is the latest version of Microsoft's popular Visual Studio development environment and has many features that make application development easier and more pleasant. These chapters will equip you to use Visual Studio throughout the rest of the book.

Part 2 covers the core features of VB.NET. If you know Visual Basic, you will have a definite leg up in learning VB.NET, and you can quickly skim this section, paying attention to the information in the sidebars. Sidebars alert you to either (1) the first time a concept new to VB.NET is introduced, or (2) a significant change to the VB.NET language that experienced VB programmers should note. If you are not familiar with Visual Basic, this section is for you. It will quickly bring you up to speed on the core topics of data types, operators, and control structures.

Part 3 examines the object-oriented features of VB.NET. This language is now fully object-oriented, which is one of the most significant improvements in VB.NET. In this part, we begin by examine how classes are built. Subsequent chapters discuss implementation and interface inheritance. These topics are covered gradually and thoroughly, making this part of the book accessible to readers without previous object-oriented experience.

Part 4 covers Windows programming in VB.NET. Microsoft has adopted a new approach to developing Windows applications that will be readily apparent to previous VB programmers. Systematic coverage is presented on the core topics in Windows Forms, including form design, controls, events, menus, toolbars, and dialogs. The rich variety of useful controls provided by Windows Forms is covered in detail.

Part 5 explores the relationships between VB.NET and the .NET Framework. .NET collection classes are introduced. We also examine the .NET interfaces that classes must implement for fundamental operations such as copying and comparing objects. Delegates, a .NET callback mechanism, are discussed. We also introduce both VB.NET file I/O and database programming using ADO.NET. We look at multiple thread programming and attributes. Attributes are powerful in .NET, enabling the programmer to accomplish tasks declaratively, even while writing very little code. You can implement custom attributes in VB.NET. You can read information about custom attributes, or any other metadata, by a mechanism known as "reflection." The book concludes with an introduction to components and assemblies.

Sample Programs

The only way to really learn a programming language is to read and write many, many programs. This book provides many programs that illustrate features of VB.NET. The programs are clearly labeled in the text, and they can all be found in the software distribution that accompanies this book, available through our associated Web site. Also, a case study illustrates many features of VB.NET working together in combination, as they would in a practical application. We make a special point of demonstrating the object-oriented features of VB.NET. If you are new to OO, reading the case study is a must!

The sample programs are provided in a self-extracting file. When expanded, a directory structure is created, rooted in C:\OI\IntroVb. The sample programs are in directories Chap01, Chap02, and so on. All the samples for a given chapter are in individual folders within the chapter directories. The names of the folders are clearly identified in the text. An icon in the margin alerts you to a code example. The case study is in a directory called CaseStudy, at the same level as the chapter directories.

This book is part of The Integrated .NET Series. The sample programs for other books in the series are located in their own directories beneath \OI, so all the .NET examples from all books in the series will be located in a common area as you install them.

A solid Intro for intermediate - advanced programmers

This book is just what it says, and introduction. I found it useful for my purpose, to get a broad and deep enough "working understanding" of VB.NET.
It is a broad introduction, covering lots of advanced topics such as exceptions, hash tables, threading, .NET framework, etc. There are code examples for everything the author talks about and downloadable source code. This is a good book as long as it's used for it's intended purpose.
It is not a tutorial, in fact unless you are familiar with object oriented programming, threading, etc. much of this book may be too daunting. However, if you know Java or C++ you'll be able to devour this book. You know, at times I felt as if I was reading a Java book - the similarities in VB.NET are so striking.
Once so devoured however you will not find this book a satisfying reference for "big league" coding. You'll need to know much more about Visual Studio.NET and .NET framework for your serious applicaion development. Also I expect there tons of tiny tidbits about the language that a good reference would have. The index is disappointing - 8 pages for over 650 pages of text - but this is the rule, not the exception in these things. There are also no appendicies summarizing the language.
