Dr. John Samuel Barnett was a professor of Theology and Church History at The Master's Seminary and an associate pastor at Grace Community Church with John MacArthur in Sun Valley, California. the joy of a word filled family

A very readable, refreshingly biblical perspective on the family and parenting that has a fine balance between helpful principles and the practical realm. If there is one book to have in library regarding parenting, this is it. A 10 on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being excellent. It provides encouragement from one who has been there who understands both the difficulties and joys of marriage and raising children.

Great Biblical Family Life Book

I am thankful for this book that addresses family life biblically. Barnett offers great hope for families at every stage of life, with a biblical basis. His humble, warm and gracious style is encouraging and challenging. I appreciate the inclusion of every aspect of family life with responsibility for each member. Stronger, biblical marriages and families can change a nation. Not with lightning speed, but the slow work that is deep, meaningful, and real, benefitting generations of that family for years to come.

Delightful telling of Molly Pitcher's Story.

This is a most delightful telling of all the events leading up to Molly Pitcher's day of heroism at the Battle of Monmouth during the American Revolution. We learn from the beginning how she was a servant before she got married and she and her husband didn't wish to be separated during the war and so she along with other wives would help the soldiers out. There are more details about the day at Monmouth than I've heard before, such as how she was so exhausted at the end of the day she just lay down. And the soldiers who were so grateful for her having given them water throughout the day carried her and her husband off the field. The illustrations are very lovely, she is perhaps portrayed more glamorously than I think is probably realistic. But that is easily overlooked and helps with the story. The writing is simple and refreshing. And the book is appropriate for both the young and the old. A definite five out of five star book.

About the Author
GEORGE W. HOLDEN, Ph.D. is Professor of Psychology at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX. He received his B.A. from Yale University and his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After earning his degree in developmental psychology with a minor in social psychology, he was a member of the psychology faculty at the University of Texas for 23 years. While at U.T., he was head of the developmental area from 1990 to 1996 and the Director of the Institute of Human Development and Family Studies from 1995 to 1997. For five years (1999 to 2004) he served as Associate Chair of the Psychology Department. He is a fellow of the American Psychological Society and a member of the Society for Research in Child Development, the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children, and the Society for Research in Human Development, where he is currently President. He has been or is on the editorial boards of Child Development, Developmental Psychology, Journal of Family Psychology, Parenting, and the Journal of Emotional Abuse. Dr. Holden’s research interests are in the area of social development, with a focus on parent-child relationships. He is especially interested in understanding the determinants of parental behavior, parental social cognition, and the causes and consequences of family violence. For example, he has investigated how parenting is affected and children are impacted by marital violence. Another topic he has investigated in several studies is parental use of physical punishment and children’s perception of it. His research has been supported by grants from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, Department of Health and Human Services, National Institutes of Justice, the Guggenheim Foundation, and the Hogg Foundation for Mental Health. He is the author of numerous scientific articles and chapters, and the books Parenting: A dynamic perspective (Sage, 2010) and Parents and the Dynamics of Child Rearing (Westview, 1997). In addition he co-edited Children Exposed to Marital Violence (American Psychological Association, 1998) and the Handbook of Family Measurement Techniques, Vol. 2 & 3 (Sage, 2001). He is married and has three children.

Great translation, but buy the longer edition.

Both Dan Garber and Roger Ariew are excellent early modern scholars, especially on Descartes and Leibniz. This edition contains Leibniz's 'Discourse on Metaphysics', 'On the Ultimate Origination of Things', the Preface to his 'New Essays', and the 'Monadology'. All of these texts are essential to any serious study of Leibniz's thought. However, as Dan Garber carefully explains in his recent book, there is a great prejudice to read too seriously the later Leibniz and interpret very important aspects of his early thought teleologically in light of the later Leibniz of monads. This Hackett edition is sufficient for anyone wanting the most recent scholarly English translations of Leibniz's famous short works that I mentioned. But for a few dollars more, and if you're really interested in Leibniz that money won't be an issue, definitely buy the 366 page Hackett edition of the same translators (rather than this miniscule 84 page edition) to have a variety of short writings of Leibniz written between 1675-1716. The edition linked here: Philosophical Essays contains everything in the smaller Hackett edition, plus numerous other short writings by Leibniz, as well as his writings on some of his contemporaries and some of the very famous letters he wrote to Clarke, Huygens, Wolff, Bernoulli, Arnauld, etc.

Leibniz was an extremely extensive writer. I have read that there are over 75,000 different pieces of writing that are left over for editors to put out (which are still far from being published in anything near a definitive edition). However, if one is serious about studying Leibniz, it is best not to just go right at the Monadology and the Discourse. Much of Leibniz's earlier thought is just as important to read. It's hard to get your hands on a good English copy of Leibniz's work, but you can start with what Hackett gives you, and the Bennett translation of Leibniz's 'New Essays' and the Theodicy can also be found here on Amazon, along with some full volumes of some of his correspondence.
