About the Author
Anne McCaffrey, one of the world’s most popular authors, is best known for her Dragonriders of Pern� series. She was the first woman to win the two top prizes for science fiction writing, the Hugo and Nebula awards. She was also given the American Library Association’s Margaret A. Edwards Award for Lifetime Literary Achievement in Young Adult Fiction, was inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame, and was named a Science Fiction Writers of America Nebula Grand Master. Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1926, McCaffrey relocated to Ireland in the 1970s, where she lived in a house of her own design, named Dragonhold-Underhill. She died in 2011.

Dragonriders of Pern (Kindle Edition)

First, I'd like to say that I love these books. I re-read them ever couple years and it's a fresh story with new meaning each time. For me it's a timeless series.

I offer many thanks to Anne MaCaffery and her son Todd McCaffery who has picked up the reins of story telling with the Realms of Pern.

As for the Kindle Edition of this book, I am sorely disappointed in the typographical errors. In a time when we have simple spell checking on just about every application we use, it's depressing to see this digital media plagued with such inconsideration for the reader.

The spelling of the character names are misspelled, sometimes from paragraph to paragraph. There are major typographical mistakes in connection words that require the reader to read, and then re-read the entire sentence to discern the actual word intended as different words could change then entire feel and meaning of the sentence.

Paying roughly the same for this Kindle Edition as I would for a new mass-market paperback, I question why anyone would pay full price when a print copy can be acquired, used, at a faction of the cost.

The Kindle Edition is a sad disservice to the readers and fans of Anne McCaffery.

Del Rey and Random House Digital should be ashamed of themselves for releasing such a poor quality product!!

EXCELLENT STORY, HORRIBLE EDITION

In The Dragonriders of Pern, Anne McCaffrey creates a stunning and richly detailed world. It's clear on reading these stories that they are very dear to McCaffrey's heart. Her blend of science, music and human drama are supported by a wholly believable mythology which bridges the gap between our earth and Pern.
Unfortunately, this edition was hastily thrown together without any regard for the author's hard work. On seemingly every page there are typographical errors so severe that McCaffrey's spell is broken. Character names constantly shift spelling. Words are misspelled, mixed up and changed to the point that the prose completely falls apart. At times geographic locations on Pern are switched with character names...this is a work of Science Fiction/Fantasy but when the place where you live starts talking all believability goes out the window. The sloppy editing of the edition was so bad I ended up buying individual copies of Dragonflight, Dragonquest and The White Dragon. I noticed none of the errors I saw in the three-in-one volume.
I highly recommend reading Dragonflight, Dragonquest, and The White Dragon, but save yourself the confusion and disappointment of this three-in-one edition. Buy each separately.

This is the first book I bought on my kindle and I was sorely disappointed in this version of the books. There were many errors in all three books and it left so many plots unexplained. I ended up buying the full versions of the original books and wish I hadn't wasted my money on this one.

Too many serious coding errors in the samples

I just wanted to vent my displeasure with some of the errors in the code samples in "Java Enterprise Design Patterns (Vol 3)". One specific pattern I tested was the Ephemeral Cache Item pattern (pg. 325). Not just one simple error but some serious flaws in the code (both as printed in the book and as copied on the CD). The background DeletionScheduler thread is not reducing the currentCacheCounter and more problematic is the fact that the run method (on that thread) only enters a while loop if there are no objects in the cache (quite the opposite from what should be happening). As well there are another 2 lines of code in that while loop that had to be moved. I would think a junior or intermediate developer would quickly get frustrated if they tried to implement that code. As for me, well I would definately think twice again before spending my money on a book published by Wiley. I also believe that if Mark Grand is going to put his name as the sole author on a book, he should take the time (or hire a code monkey) to test the code prior to publishing it. JM2C

Excellent pattern descriptions

This is an excellent well-written book on Enterprise design patterns. Mark Grand presents his topics very clearly and does a very good job of describing each pattern he discusses.
The book starts with a very thorough tutorial on UML that provides a lot of different examples of the various diagrams and the elements of each and how they are used and work together. This part of the book gives a good foundation for the balance of the book, which makes heavy use of UML diagrams in the descriptions of the patterns.
Firstly, the book is logically divided into different sections based on the common uses of the patterns described. Then each pattern description is broken down into various parts. Mark does an excellent job of focusing in on the various things that affect the pattern in use (he calls them forces) he also uses real world examples to describe usage these examples make it much easier for the reader to comprehend what the author is trying to say.
This is not a book that you will just pick up and read in order to learn all about enterprise patterns and how to use them. Instead this is a book that you will read once then use each time you are implementing a pattern in order to see what you've missed and to get ideas on how to better get your job done. From a purely educational point of view the book is very good and will teach you a lot about the patterns in it. From a development standpoint it might be even more valuable in that it can be used as a reference to get alternative ideas or to see what consideration you may have missed in your implementations. I would recommend this book to anyone doing enterprise work currently or who might be doing it in the future.
Now I have to go out and get the first two volumes .

There is more than just one patterns book

I think there is room on the shelf for more than one book on patterns. Gamma and the rest of the GoF didn't invent patterns, and I bet if you talked to them, they would say the same thing. Their book is one way to look at them. A LOT of other people do books on patterns, from different points of view, and they (for the most part and to differing degrees) are valuable contributions to the literature. Some good ones include Pattern Oriented Software Architecture (or POSA) in 2 volumes, and Core J2EE Patterns. I think this book is a great disection of patterns methodology in Java. It's not GoF, but I don't think it has to be. Judged on it's own merits, it's really a good book, and I get very tired of people saying it has to be GoF.

A quality book with lots of insight into racing car setup. However, it is extremely biased towards oval track racing and I was a liitle misled by the sportscar on the cover. Many of the things discussed still apply, but was somewhat disappointed by the misleading cover.

Bob Bolles thinks he knows a lot. He spends most of the book saying the following: "This is a picture of a racecar. It goes faster now because of my methods." He makes stringent recommendations, for instance he says a pavement oval car should never ever have the left side track bar higher than the right, but does not explain why. He also spends an entire chapter saying "moment centers are important, so buy my software so you can make sure yours is in the right place," but then he never fully explains how different roll center locations give different handling characteristics and can be used to tune the car. He has the audacity to say that if you listen to him, you can calculate the right setup before you get to the track, and have balanced handling before you ever do a practice lap. Claims such as this may support Bob's ego, but they do nothing for the racer who wants to tune his car after recognizing handing issues, rather than simply throw in a baseline setup from a book.

If you want an example of what I am talking about, you can read this article he wrote about how everyone in racing has been wrong for most of the last twenty years because they used a strategy other than his: [...] Of course, Bob and his community college engineering degree must certainly know better than the long time racers with years of experience and the engineers who have actually studied vehicle dynamics and had careers setting up racecars.

In fairness, there are things in this book that are worth knowing. I am probably better off for having read it, but only slightly. Along with the sound principles, there is misinformation from Bob's slight misunderstanding of physics. He gets most of it right, but he is wrong on some things, like when he says that weight placed behind the rear axle lifts up the front end, causing you to lose force pushing you down in to the racetrack overall. In reality, a 3400lb racecar must be supported by 3400lbs of force in order to not fall through the ground when it is standing still, so obviously moving weight around cannot change the total force between the ground and the car, only where it acts (obviously moving weight to the rear reduces front weight, but it won't make the car lighter overall). There are many good reasons to keep weight toward the center of the car, but Mr Bolle's seems to have made one up that is entirely invalid.

For those wanting to be educated on the subject, I recommend "Racecar Vehicle Dynamics" and "Tune to Win" for learning applied vehicle dynamics concepts (though they are not oval oriented like this book). For those wanting to go fast on a road course, avoid Bob, he has never made a right turn in his life (though I do not think he has driven or worked on a racecar either). For those wanting to go fast on an oval, I do not know a better book to recommend, but I would say read Mr. Bolles's Circle Track articles (free online), before ever spending your money on his book.

I enjoyed this book. It is well written and goes into in depth description of how a race car suspension works and should handle. I work on road course stock cars, but found this book very informative.

Great resource

I acquired Frederick Copleston's "A History of Philosophy" more than 40 years ago when I was a graduate student in philosophy at Johns Hopkins. (My, how times have changed. The individual volumes have a prices on the cover of anywhere from 95� to $1.25.) I have used this multivolume history frequently ever since. Whether I have wanted to find information on some aspect or other of the thought of a particular philosopher or when I have wanted to get an overview of a particular period in the history of philosophy, I have turned to Copleston. There is no philosopher of any consequence or any aspect of that philosopher's thought that is too minor to not at least receive a mention by Copleston. His knowledge of the history of philosophy is encyclopedic. While I also highly recommend using primary-source material to gain a fuller knowledge of the thought of any philosopher, Copleston is a great starting point if one wants an initial overview before plunging into a philosopher's works in more depth. Of all the histories of philosophy available, this is certainly one of the best and the most complete.
