Great Book

I use this book on a daily basis and find it invaluable to what I do. Some of the examples don't work but if you get past that the explanations are useful and boiled down enough for the busiest of DBA's to absorb. Interestingly this is a text book at a Major University.

Limited Usefulness

The first thing that troubled me about this book was the fact that the block designs are all shown only as single blocks. There is no indication of how the blocks look when put together into a quilt. Unless you have much more skill at visualization than I do, you will have to draw out multiples of the blocks in order to see the patterns that will appear when the blocks are set together for a quilt. Still, with such an enormous number of block designs, it might have been difficult to fit in this additional information.
The big problem is the oft-repeated claim that the "patterns are easily drafted..." Well, no they aren't. The designs do not even necessarily show the edges of the patches that need to be cut -- for example, Odd Fellow's Cross is shown with patches normally pieced from three triangles displayed as though they were a single odd-shaped patch. This is true of many blocks, where there is no indication of seams. There is no hint that some parts of the blocks may be appliqued rather than pieced. Nor is there any suggestion about grain lines for the pieces, the best order in which to combine them, the traditional set of the blocks, or any construction details or suggestions whatsoever. Although I have made a dozen quilts, and generally drafted them from drawings in books, I don't think I will be able to make any quilts just from the drawings in this book.
One of the neat things about this book is that each pattern has numerous traditional names listed. If you have a quilt and would like to identify it, you will probably be able to -- if you are willing to browse through 5500 blocks in order to do so. Now, if you just know the name of the quilt and are hoping to get an idea of what it might look like, you are in luck, because there is an index allowing you to do just that.
The other neat thing about the book is of course the very large number of blocks pictured. I cannot say that you will find every single block you might want, however, because -- ironically enough -- this book does not contain the rare block I am searching for! Still, this book would have given me no more information than the photograph in which I first saw the elusive block.
This is a book for the quilt scholar, and for the mathematically-skilled quilter who doesn't really need a pattern. Reasonably-skilled quilters would do better with Better Homes and Gardens 505 Quilt Blocks or Ruby McKim's 101 Patchwork Patterns.

Form, Function, Whatever

Dr. Lardas' grounding of the early Beats' intellectual program in their communal reading of Oswald Spengler's _Decline of the West_ is an unusually substantive contribution to the field. Too often, monographs on the Beats are either tedious [strange] political treatises masquerading as literary history, or hagiographies of Kerouac's youthful wanderlust, neither of which category of inquiry could possibly add anything to the witness of the individual artists in question through their works. However, Lardas shows that Spengler's vision of the cyclical nature of civilization and the contemporeneity of the end of the Western European cycle led Burroughs, Kerouac and Ginsberg to look for the seeds of the next cycle in the vibrant, marginalized communities of which they were a part.
Dr. Lardas' prose style can best be described as "sparkling ramble". The energy of his ideas, bursting with the Mediterranean vigor of his jacket photo, at times overwhelms the larger structure of the book that is laid upon them. Happily enough this compositional tension congrues with the subject matter.

Those who know know, those who don't won't

Bless my soul jelly roll, this is not ordinary literary criticism about sources and influences but an epic drama, a hero's journey. A murderer, a schizophrenic, a male prostitute and an alcoholic read a proto-Nazi theory of everything and find personal redemption through pop culture.
But is this the final frame of reference? Every generation since has struggled to re-frame the meaning of the past day by day, and I suspect that's what this book (or its subject matter anyway) is "really" about. It's post-modern, rock-and-roll, cheese bait and cadillac fins. You be the poem.

But once modernism is accepted as “good” or valuable (as a great deal of modernist art now is), its status as a subversive aesthetic intervention seems undermined. The contributors to Bad Modernisms tease out the contradictions in modernism’s commitment to badness.

Bad Modernisms thus builds on and extends the “new modernist studies,” recent work marked by the application of diverse methods and attention to texts and artists not usually labeled as modernist. In this collection, these developments are exemplified by essays ranging from a reading of dandyism in 1920s Harlem as a performance of a “bad” black modernist imaginary to a consideration of Filipino American modernism in the context of anticolonialism. The contributors reconsider familiar figures—such as Virginia Woolf, D. H. Lawrence, Josef von Sternberg, Ludwig Wittgenstein, W. H. Auden, and Wyndham Lewis—and bring to light the work of lesser-known artists, including the writer Carlos Bulosan and the experimental filmmaker Len Lye. Examining cultural artifacts ranging from novels to manifestos, from philosophical treatises to movie musicals, and from anthropological essays to advertising campaigns, these essays signal the capaciousness and energy galvanizing the new modernist studies.
