Reading the scholarship and enveloping discussions, I became interested in Professor Jung's commentaries.

I suggest the paper by Marie-Louise von Franz on the visions of St. Perpetua, what Jung terms the "strange mentality of the Schismatics of the 2d century," and Dr. E. Ley's comprehensive paper on Dreams of the Renaissance Scholar Girolamo Cardano.

More immediate for me are the three levels of spiritual activity: Phantasia, thinking that advances first principles and preservation by memory. These dynamic levels resemble the first principle archetype idea, developmental processes and result. The number three points to three wishes, three bears, three little pigs, and the third time charm.

Beauty in the Ordinary - An Author's Perspective on the Japanese Aesthetic

"'The quality that we call beauty . . . must always grow from the realities of life.' And to Tanizaki this meant the whole of life, the base as well as the noble, eating and defecating as well as playgoing and the contemplation of calligraphy" (pp. 46).

Several years ago I found myself living in an old, run-down apartment in the port city of Joetsu, Niigata Prefecture, located off the coast of the Japan Sea. The frigid tile of the moldy shower room, the damaged shoji separating the cramped quarters, the traditional tatami bedroom I slept in - those six months in that largely rural subsection of Japan remain vivid in my memory; and, though I would come to experience much more of Japan in later years, those memories in that apartment and in that city formed the basis by which I understood this short "essay" from Tanizaki.

Written in 1933, Tanizaki's "In Praise of Shadows" (陰影礼賛) feels like a "stream-of-consciousness" piece, the author's musings on traditional Japan and a dying aesthetic in the wake of Western modernism. While the Japanese have notably strived to retain their cultural heritage, Tanizaki (if he were alive today) would likely argue that only vestiges remain: "[F]or Tanizaki a museum piece is no cause for rejoicing. An art must live as a part of our daily lives or we had better give it up. We can admire it for what it once was, and try to understand what made it so - as Tanizaki does in "In Praise of Shadows" - but to pretend that we can still participate in it is mere posturing" (pp. 48). Tanizaki paints a world that is ultimately lost, yet uncannily familiar - a world, for those of us who have lived in Japan and/or are familiar with the basics of Japanese culture, still exists in the shadows.

Anyone interested in the Japanese aesthetic and culture ought to read this (at only 48 pages, there's really no excuse not to). While some segments failed to capture my interest, it was, on the whole, fascinating. That Tanizaki can turn the toilet - perhaps the epitome of mundane living - into "a place of spiritual repose" (pp. 3), even something elegant and beautiful, speaks to the depth of the work. And, at points, Tanizaki's musings seem to move beyond the realm of aesthetics to touch upon truths of the human condition, as captured in this favorite passage of mine:

"We do not dislike everything that shines, but we do prefer a pensive luster to a shallow brilliance, a murky light that, whether in a stone or an artifact, bespeaks a sheen of antiquity. Of course this 'sheen of antiquity' of which we hear so much is in fact the glow of grime. In both Chinese and Japanese the words denoting this glow describe a polish that comes of being touched over and over again, a sheen produced by the oils that naturally permeate an object over long years of handling -- which is to say grime. . . . There is no denying, at any rate, that among the elements of the elegance in which we take such delight is a measure of the unclean, the unsanitary. I suppose I shall sound terribly defensive if I say that Westerners attempt to expose every speck of grime and eradicate it, while we Orientals carefully preserve and even idealize it. Yet for better or for worse we do love things that bear the marks of grime, soot, and weather, and we love the colors and the sheen that call to mind the past that made them" (pp. 11-12).

Thoughtful, sometimes silly critical look at ideals of beauty

This was a great read. It was assigned reading for a class I had on the meaning of "beauty" in the arts. The book is largely about Japanese culture, but the experience of reading it as part of any Western-ized culture is much more about looking critically at what the Western world finds beautiful. In maybe the first ten pages, he approaches this argument in the most delightfully funny way -- by talking about toilets. By the end of this section, I was ready to say f*ck my stupid pretentious ugly toilet and install a japanese bathroom. Anyway, the point is he brings up these points in really interesting ways, and I'm always a fan of more reasons to see beauty in the world :)

PS It's so weird how amazon doesn't let you post a review unless you answer the question "How would you describe the plot of this book?", regardless of whether it's fiction with a "plot" or not. Like, the question comes up on my textbooks and this nonfiction piece too. So silly.

Obscured by Light

This is a gem of a book. Beautifully translated by Harper and Seidensticker, this series of brief meditations on Japanese aesthetics moves seemingly randomly among topics as diverse as theatre, women, lacquerware, food, toilets, hotels, and electric lights. The passage on the Japanese toilet is worth the price of the book, even if it is unclear how serious Tanizaki was being. And the section on lacquerware is one to be treasured and read again. Tanizaki mourns the passing of much of what he sees as the essence of Japan's shadow-enshrined aesthetic sensibility. But what can be done? In the end, even he finds he must acknowledge certain benefits of modern life, and he refuses to go farther than he deems practical (or affordable) in recreating the material life of the past for himself. Nevertheless, his observations clearly come from the soul of a man who feels a combination of loss and appreciation for a time when light and shadow revealed precisely what needed to be revealed, and no more. If you have never thought that sipping soup, bathing, or using the toilet could be an aesthetic experience, read this book.

About the Author

Matt Massie open-sourced Ganglia in 2000 while working as a Staff Researcher at the University of California, Berkeley. He designed ganglia to monitor a shared computational grid of clusters distributed across the United States for scientific research. In 2010, he contributed a chapter on cluster monitoring for the O'Reilly book "Web Operations: Keeping the Data On Time" by John Allspaw and Jesse Robbins. Matt is currently a software engineer at Cloudera focused on Apache Hadoop enterprise management and monitoring.

Bernard Li is a High Performance Computing (HPC) Systems Engineer at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. He is currently one of the maintainers of the Ganglia project. He has been involved with HPC since 2003 and has worked on Open Source projects such as OSCAR, SystemImager and Warewulf.

Brad Nicholes is a member of the Apache Software Foundation and is currently working as a Consultant Software Engineer for NetIQ. In addition to being a committer on the Apache HTTPD and APR projects, Brad is also a developer as well as one of the administrators of the Ganglia project. As a developer on the Ganglia project, Brad developed and introduced the C/C++ and Python metric module interface into Gangla 3.1.x. He also developed and contributed several of the initial metric modules that currently ship with Ganglia. Brad attended school at the University of Utah and Brigham Young University and holds a degree in Computer Science.

Vladimir Vuksan (Broadcom) has worked in technical operations, systems engineering and software development for over 15 years. Prior to Broadcom he has worked at Mocospace, Rave Mobile Safety, Demandware, University of New Mexico implementing high availability solutions and building tools to make managing and running infrastructure easier.

Nice, easy to read, but a little too predicatable romance novel!

This is another story in the authors (Nicola Marsh) "In Her Shoes' series where modern day Cinderella's get their grooms.

This time the story is about Eve Pemberton and Bryce Gibson. Eve's brother, Tony was good friends with Bryce throughout school and so had met Bryce before several times.

But Eve has changed considerably since Bryce had last seen her - she is not longer the be-speckled shy you girl. She is now a very successful event planer in Melbourne, Australia. As the title eludes, 2 of her close friends are now married and the third is getting married soon. Thus Eve is the only single woman left among her friends and does not want to be 'that girl' for all the wedding festivities.

Enter Bryce Gibson - advertiser extraordinaire and a billionaire to boot! Eve just happens to be internet searching and stubbles across his picture and name only to find out he is relocating to her city with his new company.

Being slightly desperate, Eve cold calls him with a 'business' proposition to be her date for all of the wedding festivities - one month of being together with no strings attached. But it has to be strictly platonic. IF he agrees she will, in return for his help, introduce him to several highly regarded businessmen (all of which are married to her girlfriends).

The truth eventually comes out about night of Tony's (her brother) 21st birthday party when Bryce 'almost' kissed Eve but bailed out at the last possible second when his friends came calling. This 'secret' is very interesting and I'm not going to tell you any more.

The rest , as the say, is history. This is truly a modern day retelling of the Cinderella fable.

I would rate this nice, easy to read, romance novel a very good 8.5 to 9.0 out of 10.

About the Author
Cecil M. Robeck, Jr is Professor of Church History and Ecumenics and director of the David J. DuPlessis Center for Christian Spirituality at Fuller Theological Seminary in California. He served as the editor of Pneuma: The Journal of the Society for Pentecostal Studies for nine years and is the author of The Azusa Street Mission and Revival: The Birth of the Global Pentecostal Movement (2006) and Prophecy at Carthage: Perpetua, Tertullian, and Cyprian (1992).

Amos Yong is J. Rodman Williams Professor of Theology and Dean of the School of Divinity at Regent University in Virginia. He has authored or edited more than two dozen books relating to Pentecostal theology, including Pentecostalism and Prosperity: The Socioeconomics of the Global Charismatic Movement (2012) and The Spirit of Creation: Modern Science and Divine Action in the Pentecostal-Charismatic Imagination (2011).

About the Author
Dr. David Aucoin is a native of New England and a graduate of Michigan State University, where he received his undergraduate and doctorate degrees in veterinary medicine. He completed an Internship and Residency in Internal Medicine at the Animal Medical Center in New York City, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship in Clinical Pharmacology at nearby Cornell University Medical College and Rockefeller University. Dr. Aucoin was Associate Research Professor at North Carolina State University for seven years before joining Veterinary Centers of America as Director of Interns at West Los Angeles Animal Hospital. Dr. Aucoin is currently Chief Technology Officer at ANTECH Diagnostics in Los Angeles, California.
