A Valuable Companion for Finishing

I have a love-hate relationship with finishing. I reach a point in a woodworking project at which I just want to be done. Oh, right, then it needs to be finished. And that means boring time spent sanding, a relatively small amount of time applying stain, oil, varnish, etc., and then large amounts of time waiting for drying. Not that I don't do something else, but those 24-hour-long blocks of drying time simply prolong the conclusion of the project. But in fact it's the quality of the finishing that makes me step back and either feel proud of the way a project looks and feels or not.

To improve my finishing skills I bought Bob Flexner's Understanding Wood Finishing a couple of years ago and this month Wood Finishing 101. Both are excellent books, contain valuable information, and are well-written and edited. The former is more technical and contains much more in-depth information about wood finishing. In that respect one can return to it again and again to absorb more information. But...

Wood Finishing 101, as the author says, is the missing book that most beginners (and even experienced amateurs like me) need. It is far more visual, a big plus in actually teaching "how to do it." Each type of finish is addressed in sections with photos of typical brands currently on the market as well as step-by-step directions for use. Four-color photgraphs are clear and captioning perfectly related to the photos. Both books are worth having, "Understanding..." for in-depth knowledge and "...101" for easy-to-understand application.

I'm hardly a full-time amateur, but when I do great ready to finish a project, I've always turned to Understanding Wood Finishing. From now one Wood Finishing 101 will be my first choice to brush-up (no pun intended) on how to get a great finish on my latest work.

Deep, glossy, prismatic The best I've read and utilized awesome.

Arrived timely better then expected. Exceptionally well written and illistrated. Multible methods discussed each finish has litterly step by step instructions. The author himself a master shares how he likes to hold sandpaper demonstrating the very basics to the repairing of finishes in an A,B,C how to tell what the finish is that your repairing. His way of teaching works great. His insight with practical knowlage woven with in the finishing lesson. Sutleties lacquer or shalac what's what even better how to mix your own finishes Wipe-on, brush, up to spray. 1) The best is he will teach you what situation is best for a specific finish. 2) just as important when NOT to use a finish. 3) Quick over view of finish with pros and cons. 4) set-up tools, supplies, allowing for you preference. Pictures(pix). 5) walk thru with pix. 6) Clean up. 7) what might have gone wrong how to tell 8) Fix for each wrong 9) each type of finish has shortcuts and there cost and best of all each categories fool prof finish. The detailed info is presented in an easy format. Best of all sections are written so you can put it down and pick it up without missing a beat. Of all the WW books this is a MUST HAVE for all finishers and WoodWorkers. You will make the finish then use it can't forget it.

'Great Wood Finishes' is a better book by far.

I have this book and two written by Jeff Jewitt. Jeff Jewitt's book called 'Great Wood Finishes' is far better than this one, and I recommend it instead of this book.

This book has a few glaring omissions. There is no coverage at all on lacquer finishes. There is also no coverage on rubbing out finishes, which is almost mandatory if you want a top-quality result. Furthermore, there isn't a section showing how to do multi-step finishes (for example: apply water based dye, sand, seal, apply toner, apply final finish). Again, to get top-quality results sometimes you need to do more complex finishes. All of this is covered in 'Great Wood Finishes', none of it is covered it this.

The coverage on water-based dyes also wasn't very good - in fact I think parts of it were just inaccurate. He claims that water based dyes are equivalent to a watered-down latex paint. I don't think this is true, because latex paint contains solids which dye does not. Of course, you'll learn this in Jeff's book.

This book had a few good tips about commercially available finishes, but not much else.

Scholarly, but illuminating

I ordered this book after reading Pervo's "The Mystery of Acts" and was not disappointed. I will warn the reader that this one is quite a bit more dense and scholarly, but Pervo's humor nevertheless comes through frequently in illuminating ways.

This book will take you through the Pauline epistles and demonstrate what was probably going on in the social background that led to the original composition (by Paul or later authors), possible redactions and some interpolations. He shows how the figure of Paul was adjusted with each generation in an effort to keep Paul real and relevant. He also reveals some dire conflicts that were going on in the early "church" (if it can even be called that). I think it could be said, based on the evidence, that Paul pretty much created Christianity and his objectives were highly laudable. It's too bad that later officialdom in the form of a proto-orthodoxy felt the need to suppress or distort some of his ideas.

If you are really interested in the origins of Christianity, you'll want to read this book even if you are a non-scholar such as myself. With a dictionary to hand, you'll do fine! Highly recommended!

About the Author
F. A. Hayek (1899-1992), recipient of the Medal of Freedom in 1991 and co-winner of the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics in 1974, was a pioneer in monetary theory�and a leading proponent of classical liberalism� in the twentieth century. He taught at the University of London, the University of Chicago, and the University of Freiburg.

Worthwhile sequel to The Constitution of Liberty

The thesis of volume 1 of Law, Legislation, and Liberty is that "a condition of liberty in which all are allowed to use their knowledge for their purposes, restrained only by rules of just conduct of universal application, is likely to produce for them the best conditions for achieving their aims", and that "such a system is likely to be achieved and maintained only if all authority, including that of the majority of the people, is limited in the exercise of coercive power by general principles to which the community has committed itself" (p. 55). "[W]hat the spontaneous order of society provides for us is more important for everyone, and therefore for the general welfare, than most of the particular services which the organization of government can provide, excepting only the security provided by the enforcement of the rules of just conduct" (pp. 132-133). Therefore, "law is...to consist of abstract rules which make possible the formation of a spontaneous order by the free action of individuals through limiting the range of their actions" (i.e., through preventing coercion), and it is not to be "the instrument of arrangement or organization by which the individual is made to serve concrete purposes" (p. 71).

Law, Legislation, and Liberty was intended as a sequel to The Constitution of Liberty, in that Hayek wrote it to "fill in the gaps" that he felt existed in his argument in that earlier work. He wrote and published Law, Legislation, and Liberty on and off over a time-span of approximately 15 years (early-mid 1960 to mid-late 1970s), which were in part interrupted by ill health. Hayek admits that the result is at times repetitive and lacking in organization. The reason why he did not go through the effort of redoing the entire work upon completion is because he thought he might at that rate never finish it (he was 80 years old by the time volume 3 was published).

There are still plenty of great insights, which Hayek argues persuasively and in doing so manages to portray as common sense. There are also plenty of flashes of that true rhetorical brilliance characteristic of Hayek that can make his writings such a feast to the ear and mind. On the downside, however, these rhetorical gems are hidden in a large volume of pages that at times do indeed seem tedious, repetitive, and unorganized, unlike with The Constitution of Liberty, where they literally seem to jump off the page at you. All in all, read The Constitution of Liberty first, as Hayek himself suggests. And if you're not up for reading the approximately 500 pages that make up the complete Law, Legislation, and Liberty, two chapters (30 pages total) in the book The Essence of Hayek make for a comprehensive summary exposition of the ideas in the entire trilogy ("Principles of a Liberal Social Order", ch. 20 in The Essence of Hayek, covers vols. 1-2, and "Whither Democracy?", ch. 19, covers vol. 3).

Austrian Law and Economics

While Hayek is best known as an economist, he earned doctorates in law and political science. In the Law Liberty and Legislation trilogy Hayek returns to his intellectual roots. Here we see a detailed and insightful analysis of different types of political and legal order. Hayek contrasts free and prosperous spontaneous orders with coercive states that aim allegedly at social justice.

In this first volume of Law, Liberty, and Legislation Hayek spells out the difference between general rules of conduct and policy that consciously aims at particular ends. Law, as a set of general rules of conduct, are essential to societal spontaneous order. Private law is, contrary to what it might seem, more important to securing a free and prosperous spontaneous order than is public law. Hayek became an economist by reading Carl Menger's "Principles". We can see Menger's influence all through this book. This is Austrian economics applied to law.

Law Liberty and Legislation was intended to complete the case that Hayek made for classical liberalism in The Constitution of Liberty. This trilogy combines with the Constitution of Liberty to make a powerful case for strictly limited government and free enterprise. You should read The Constitution of Liberty before starting this trilogy, but be sure to read both. Hayek's analysis of spontaneous order and government planning is highly relevant. The collapse of the USSR might have made it seem that proponents of free social order had won. But it is all too obvious that the drive for "social justice" is gaining ground. Read Hayek along with Nozick and Buchanan. These ideas are vitally important.

Spontaneous Order

Hayek's book shows how order occurs naturally in society and in very large and complex organizations as a spontaneous response to numerous, disparate, even unanticipated purposes. We do not create social order deliberately; if you think about it, this is the reason why we find some laws contradict each other, and why people have different ideas about love of country and respect for others.
As a society, people tend to create general rules to govern as many examples of behavior as possible, to fit as many situations as possible, even those that haven't been imagined.
Hayek builds on two premises: (1) that humans have limited abilities to understand and predict all possible consequences of social choices and decisions, and (2) people abstract (verb; refers to how the mind works) reality to understand it.
The ideas in the book are not difficult to understand, but to read the book requires the reader to let go of the illusion that people can make rational decisions for society.

I really like the reviews in this book. They give you the info without giving away too much of the plot twists. However, I got a little tired of the prefaces to them which are little mini-stories unto themselves. Some were pretty funny but after a while I have to admit I started skimming those to get to the actual review. Unfortunately the reviews were sometimes mixed into the story so you had to read them.
I will say that maybe this was my own fault as I read it straight through so maybe it would be better divided into chunks. Well worth the price for the amusing reviews.
