Great translation, but buy the longer edition.

Both Dan Garber and Roger Ariew are excellent early modern scholars, especially on Descartes and Leibniz. This edition contains Leibniz's 'Discourse on Metaphysics', 'On the Ultimate Origination of Things', the Preface to his 'New Essays', and the 'Monadology'. All of these texts are essential to any serious study of Leibniz's thought. However, as Dan Garber carefully explains in his recent book, there is a great prejudice to read too seriously the later Leibniz and interpret very important aspects of his early thought teleologically in light of the later Leibniz of monads. This Hackett edition is sufficient for anyone wanting the most recent scholarly English translations of Leibniz's famous short works that I mentioned. But for a few dollars more, and if you're really interested in Leibniz that money won't be an issue, definitely buy the 366 page Hackett edition of the same translators (rather than this miniscule 84 page edition) to have a variety of short writings of Leibniz written between 1675-1716. The edition linked here: Philosophical Essays contains everything in the smaller Hackett edition, plus numerous other short writings by Leibniz, as well as his writings on some of his contemporaries and some of the very famous letters he wrote to Clarke, Huygens, Wolff, Bernoulli, Arnauld, etc.

Leibniz was an extremely extensive writer. I have read that there are over 75,000 different pieces of writing that are left over for editors to put out (which are still far from being published in anything near a definitive edition). However, if one is serious about studying Leibniz, it is best not to just go right at the Monadology and the Discourse. Much of Leibniz's earlier thought is just as important to read. It's hard to get your hands on a good English copy of Leibniz's work, but you can start with what Hackett gives you, and the Bennett translation of Leibniz's 'New Essays' and the Theodicy can also be found here on Amazon, along with some full volumes of some of his correspondence.

She shows that there was a sudden reconnection of German researchers with the international scientific community, particularly with more progressive American researchers, after some twenty-five years of scientific isolation during the build-up to WWII and its aftermath. This reconnection brought about not only a new view of geoscience, but also saved German geology from self-sufficiency and patriotic arrogance by integrating it in an interdisciplinary and international framework. In so doing this book sheds much valuable light on an under-explored but crucial development in the way we understand Earth’s history, as well as the way that science functioned during times of conflict.

An excellent review of the history of impact crater research in Germany from its early (pre-20th century) beginnings until the modern era, with a focus on the Nordlinger Ries and Steinheim Basin. The book provides a fascinating synopsis of the period from the 1930s to 1970s, as the build-up to WWII and its aftermath created a crucial turning point in German geological thinking influenced by the swiftly changing political and geopolitical climate. It is full of interesting historical anecdotes, from how the staff of the Geological Museum in Munich saved part of its collections from a WWII bombing (under the nose of its fanatical director), to the fanfare and celebrations greeting the arrival of the first moon rock specimens (from the American Apollo lunar missions) in Tubingen in 1969. A wonderful book, of interest for its fresh historical perspectives as much as for its science.

Pure Light

I have read many books by "New Age" types describing their experiences with the paranormal. This is unquestionably the most compelling and well written of those books. Ms. McCannon tells a biography of sorts outlining her experiences with guardian angels, healing angels, teaching angels, and out of body experiences. Other people have written on these subjects but this is the first book that took me by the hand and let me "see" and "feel" what was happening. The writing style is conversational -- you feel that the writer is sitting in the room with you telling her story. There were moments that made me laugh and others when I had to put the book down until I stopped crying. I recommend this book for anyone who needs to get back in touch with the wonder they knew when their world was full of magic and they were certain that fairies were real.

A Personal Journey

This is a great book, both for the information and the personal journey of the author. It's like reading two books: one with information about angels and the like and another about a regular person's journey into esoteric spiritual information. As such, it's a great book on both counts, both to enhance your own journey with great information and validate the journey itself.

As an aside, this book is one of the reasons I love Amazon. I looked for this book as part of a spiritual reading group and couldn't find it anywhere. The local bookstores in my town (bless them) couldn't even locate this book in their databases. Amazon to the rescue!

Great book on angels

Dialogues with Angels is one woman's journey to finding her true self, and her mission in life. Tricia McCannon comes across as warm and totally honest, from a dysfunctional upbringing, worthy of an Oprah show, to her search for more meaning in her life, McCannon shows us her life warts and all. And what a life it is. The author connected with her guides/angels in a way that I'm sure most of us will never do, but that's okay because McCannon gives us what her angels gave her, information and the comfort that we are not alone.

With great practicality, McCannon explains how to get in touch with angels through automatic writing, meditation, dialoguing, saying it just takes a little practice. Talking out loud to them brings them closer. Well maybe so, but I wouldn't want anyone to hear me doing it or I might be labeled schizophrenic. All kidding aside, McCannon makes getting in touch with angels seem easy, and as she talks about them they seem so real that I'm already half-convinced and ready to try a few of the methods she suggests.

"Angels operate through economy. If it is less disruptive to get our attention by having a book fall of the shelf and land on our heads than by materializing in our bedrooms, that is the route they will take. They operate through subtlety. They will nudge someone to come to our aid when we are sick or need encouragement . . . And on occasion they will call our names aloud." page 109. Now someone calling my name aloud will likely scare the life out of me, so I'm suspecting that won't be the case for me.

An amazing book on angels told from the perspective of someone finding their own. When I've looked at other books about angels, the author never says exactly how they came across all the information they share with us, but McCannon lays it out. Maybe if I follow her advice, I too can find my own angel and not have to take anyone else's word for it, but that calling my name aloud thing . . . maybe a book falling on my head would be more appropriate.

Good book

Good book. Clara is a single mother who owns her own bakery and works hard to give her son the best life she can. She's stunned to get a visit from a lawyer who informs her that her son's father, a man she hasn't seen in four years, has died. And instead of being the beach bum she thought he was, he was a member of a very wealthy family, and her son has inherited his father's millions. Now she and Hank have been invited to New York to meet his family.

Clara is very nervous and not sure what to expect. She never knew her parents, and was raised in the foster care system. The Dunbarton's lifestyle is completely outside her comfort zone. It doesn't help that her son's uncle, while being her ex's twin in looks is totally different in personality. Her first impression is that he is a cold, ruthless workaholic who has no idea how to relate to her and her son.

I liked Clara a lot. She's a bit of a workaholic herself, but she works very hard to give Hank all the love and attention she never received herself. She's not sure what to expect from Grant and his mother, and is very afraid that they might try to take Hank away from her. As she gets to know Grant, she sees that there is more to him than she expected.

Grant took over running the family business even though his brother had been the older of the two. When their father died when they were kids, Brent went from planning to run the business when they grew up to becoming more irresponsible and child-like. Grant felt a great responsibility to the family legacy and gave up his own dreams to run it. He never plans to have a wife and family of his own, feeling that he is married to the business instead.

I loved seeing their relationship develop. It didn't take long for Clara to see that, in spite of his claims, Grant really wasn't happy with his life. I liked all the little things that she said and did to try to bring some happiness back into his life. She fought against the attraction she felt to him, knowing that nothing could come of it. It was pretty sweet to see the influence that Clara and Hank had on Grant, as he slowly began to see that his life was pretty empty. It was fun to see him loosen up as he talked to Clara about the fish in his aquarium, and lay on his back looking at the stars painted on the dining room ceiling. I ached for them both when Clara and Hank went back to Georgia, believing that the other didn't care the same way.

The ending was really romantic. While I wasn't entirely surprised by what Grant did, there were parts of his actions that were unexpected. I was especially surprised by what his mother did. The epilogue was really great.

I really liked Grant's mother. I had been afraid that she was going to be the type to steal Hank away, or cold and snobby to Clara. She did seem to go a little overboard with some of the things she did, but I loved the way that she embraced both Hank and Clara. There were times when she seemed like a big kid herself.

The story is about Clara Easton's life when a windfall comes her way after the carefree man who fathered her son (who was really a Park Avenue gold) has dies leaving his fortune to her son Hank. Now she's spending the holidays in dazzling New York City with the man's family, including his sexy twin brother Grant who is a real workaholic. But Grant Dunbarton is not like the fun-loving charmer who swept Clara off her feet. As time goes by Grant finds himself drawn to Clara and understands that she is not what she appears to be (a gold-digger). It is amazing how Clara opens Grant's eyes to what life is all about. A heart warming story!

Guns, armor, and crunchy goodness...

This is probably the one book that players of SWRPG have been waiting for. At first glance the book seems to be a bit on the small side at only 96 pages, and in truth it is- however, the authors have managed to do a good job of cramming all kinds of fun stuff in here.
And now for a synopsis.
Chapter 1: Weapons starts off with a quick-and-easy system for customizing your character's personal weapons. No longer must a character be a Tech Specialist to build a unique weapon (although it's still true that only Tech Specialists can mastercraft). Now anyone can make certain modifications or personalizations, as long as you have a sufficient Craft skill. Examples include increased range, improved critical, reduced weight, and increased accuracy. It is also very thoughtful that most modifications are balanced with a tradeoff in some other aspect of the weapon.
There is also a small but useful section that describes the process of Concealing a weapon on your person.
The main body of this chapter describes over 50 different blaster weapons, which is more than the entire weapon list from the Core Rulebook. There are also a few Ion Guns, a handful of lethal Disruptors (think disintegrator guns), slugthrowers, dart pistols, flechette launchers, crossbows and magna casters, wrist weapons, a good-sized list of melee weapons, grenades and grenade launchers, flamethrowers, sonic weapons, and even a few species-specific weapons like the Squip Tensor Rifle and the deadly but fragile Verpine Shatter Gun. Whew!
Chapter 2: Armor also starts off with a description of how armor can be modified, just like Chapter 1. In total 17 pieces of armor and protective gear are described, from simple tracker vests and leather jerkins up to some very tasty (and very expensive) sets of power armor.
Chapter 3: Droids, as you might guess, has an extensive list of Droid types. There are a lot of droids here, almost 20 pages worth in fact, which was a bit of a surprise. The droids cover the entire spectrum from Mouse Droids and assassin droids to Astromechs and tutoring droids. There is also some additional info on playing Droid characters.
Chapter 4: Vehicles is pretty short but still manages to describe a good array of machinery, including speeders, swoops, aircars, and walkers. Like chapters 1 and 2, there are additional rules for customizing vehicles.
Chapter 5: Equipment describes dozens of pieces of miscellaneous gear. Examples include breathers, comlinks, sensors, and medical equipment. Nothing here stands out as overly powerful, but most of it seems to be useful for a character to have.
And there you have it. There's enough equipment and technology in here to keep players and GMs picking and choosing for quite some time. In that respect, the book certainly delivers. All the items seem to be well thought out and nothing appears to be game-breaking or overbalanced.
The interior of the book is in black and white, not color, but is nonetheless tastefully done and easy to look at. The buyer should be aware that only about half the items described have a picture, but I found this to be acceptable, especially where a group of items were closely alike.
I did have a few complaints. In some cases, the picture for a given weapon or Droid is not on the same page, but on a page several numbers away. This is just a tad annoying. While I like the rules for modifications, I was disappointed at the utter lack of blaster pistol attachments (0) and rifle attachments (a mere 2). There were no cybernetics, also a disappointment (although rumor is cybernetics will appear in a future book).
In addition, there is not an alphabetical index, which can cause a bit of delay in finding a specific item. Finally, I felt that the book should have been hardcover. I don't like softcovers since they are too easy to damage. I would have gladly payed the few extra bucks.
Overall, though, these were minor complaints. I was very pleased with the book and feel that it can add a great deal of depth to any campaign. The GM can now unleash a bunch of new equipment, and the players have enough options to keep them happy too.
In total I give this book an extremely strong 4 out of 5. Along with the Core Rulebook, it is definitely the other "must have."

A lot of stuff... A must have for any GM

If you are GMing star wars, living force or the like... this is a must. Why? It provides so much more than the Core Rule book does as far as specialized weaponry. It has simply pictures of selected weaponry, devices and droids. It has several new things that can really give your campaign that edge, taking into a different level of difficulty or adventure. It can also give your characters power they didn't know existed.
Each item comes listed with its type, a small description, Price (standard), how available it actually is and which Era it comes from (a real plus). For weapons it gives everything the RCR gives along with Hardness and Break DC's. Such weapons include the BlasTech DLT-20A 3d8+3 30m Long blaster, Disruptor Pistols, Mobile Mortars, a variety of Hold out blasters, including the Happy Surprise (palm blaster). It's melee section isn't nearly as extensive as its ranged section. There are some nasty specialized weapons like the Verpine Shatter Gun (6d6) or the Rodian Repulsor Knives. Many different types of weapon attachements and a guideline for customizing your own weapons.
Similarly there are the same thing for armors. Featuring multiple types of armor, from A/K Tracker Utility Vest, to the Shadowsuit to the AV-1A Assault Armor (that looks like something off of Warhammer).
There is a nice list of droids that basically is an expansion of the RCR's list. Nothing really new, as far as game mechanics go, but a nice new list to pick and chose from. There is also a nice new listing for Vehicles in the same way for the droids, a basic expansion from the RCR. The Equipment section has a new lift providing different brands of the most common items, with a more extensive list and with some more speicalized items, like detection equipment, sensors and blaster repair kits. Again, everything comes priced with listedd availability and era availability.
Again this is a must have for any GM. One of the first books I pass around before each module is this one. People make profession rolls, get some money, want to buy something, and this book is the first thing they turn to for merchandise. Now being the GM i am, i place certain restrictions, but that's just between you as the GM and the player. As far as any player goes... this is the book that you'll need to make that signature weapon for your bounty hunter, the location to find that R2 unit you've been looking for, or just finally have that little mobile mortar handy when you need it.

A must have for Players & GM

WEAPONS

The selection of weapons is HUGE (even adding more types than the RCRB has listed). Each weapon has WPs & break DCs (which I also like). Along with new rules on Customizing & personalizing weapons.

Species chip (a optional device for Sonic weapons) - which increases effectiveness against a selected species (a few species is listed, but a GM can add more if he/she wishes) - and they are pretty cheap too.

ARMOR

Vast selection of armor & protective gear. Also rules for non-human species.

DROIDS

All Astromech units are included (which are my favorite). They also have many, many more droid types & units listed.

VEHICLES

Rules on custimizing. A big selection including : airspeeders, swoops, speeder bikes, and many more.

Also for the STAR WARS fan who is familiar with Tatooine, this book also includes the popular "Sandcrawler".

OTHER

There's even a section on jetpacks & other devices that let you fly.

Recommended if you liked the 7 habits

I'm a fan of the 7 habits. I listened to the audiobook while commuting. I listen to it once every couple years. Like the original 7 habits book, I find this book helpful. Based on the "from effectiveness to greatness" subtitle, I was worried that this material was intended only for those who were already extremely successful; I did NOT find that to be the case. What I mean is: if you found the original 7 habits helpful, I expect that you'll find this new material helpful, even if you do not yet consider yourself "highly effective."

If you already know the original 7 habits material very well, you might be disappointed by the large amount of time that the 8th habit book spends restating and elaborating upon the original 7 habits topics.

If you have not read the original 7 habits; I suggest that you start with the 7 habits before spending any time with this newer book.

This is okay, but it is too long-winded, not that original, and less enlightening then his original "7 Habits" book.

When I first read Covey's The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People book over 15 years ago, I loved that book. It was filled with wisdom and ideas. There are less Aha's, epiphanies, enlightenments in this book, and the writing drags on too slowly through each chapter and the book uses far too many words to swim around some concepts that could be more concisely written. For example, one of my favorite sections in the book is at the very end in "Appendix 1: Developing The 4 Intelligences/Capacities - A Practical Guide To Action". The 20 pages of this Appendix 1 are succinct, concise, filled with little pearl nuggets of wisdom, and I cannot think of a single sentence that is filler material in that section. I am glad that I did not read this "Appendix 1" section at the end of the book first or else I would have thought that the book dragged on even more.

Most of the chapters in this book seem to float around in the general vicinity of a topic with far less purpose, often being repetitive, and I often found myself thinking "where are you going with this?" while I was in the middle of a chapter. Unlike his '7 Habits' book that I finished reading within two weeks, it took me about ten months to finally finish reading this book because I got bored with it numerous times when a chapter got bogged down, oftentimes because I thought the discussion went wandering aimlessly too far off into the deep philosophical jungles or became too repetitive. It is very rare for me to take ten months to finish reading any book. But with this book, I would read one or two chapters, get bored with it, leave it alone for one or two months, and then grudgingly resume reading it later on.

I get the distinct impression that during the 15 years between his '7 Habits' book and this '8th Habit' book, Covey read, considered, and included much more Eastern philosophy into his worldview. There are some good concepts in this book, albeit they are also not original ideas. Finding one's inner voice and passion, and the importance of trust, character, and discipline are well-trodden ground, covered from many different angles by motivational/business/self-help books over the previous 40+ years. Even if you like this repackaging of well-known concepts, you still have to chew through a lot of verbal gristle in this book in order to get to the essential meat of each concept that Covey is trying to convey. This book could have been a far better read if its concepts were distilled down into one third less pages (or even one half less pages in some chapters) because the wording in most chapters is not focused well and the book is in serious need of heavy amounts of editing and rewording.

You Get Out What You Put Into It!

Much like Harold Stolovitch and Erica Keeps in their great little book, TELLING AIN'T TRAINING, Steven Covey has adopted a unique format for his message. The quotes, the reference to the movies on the enclosed DVD, the mapping to other thought leaders, all point you to make reading this book a very personal experience. It IS about you!

It is a big message Covey shares with us and one that takes some noodling through. The fact that it requires thinking, reflection, and ultimately action may make this a book that everyone has but not everyone is ready for. Timing is everything. You may not need/accept this message at this time, but a some point in time, you will be sitting there reading saying to yourself, "Ah, Hah!" instead of what other reviewers have referred to as, "Duh."

This book is the step beyond just "Sharpening the Saw (effective habit #7). This is about taking your accumulated wisdom/bliss/passion and passing it on to others as well as helping them do the same. It is about legacy, learning, and living. It is a book that requires some maturity to appreciate.

If you are looking for a quick fix, the next big thing, some checklist you can race through, this book is not for you. IF, however, you are looking for something to help you make a significant difference in your life and the lives of others, PLEASE...read, re-read, and - most of all - DO what Stephen suggests.

Arrived quickly and in excellent condition

The book itself was in very fine condition when it arrived and within a good time frame at arrival. I myself have a collection of the oz books in the form of graphic novels with Eric Shanower's picture adaptations and this new addition is very nice manga illustrations. Hopefully, Seven Seas Entertainment will come up with the remainder of the books so that I, along with other Oz lovers, can enjoy those old books with that new manga twist.

I not only got the book much sooner than I excpected, it was in MUCH better shape than I had expected. I bought it for the purpose of cutting it up and using certain sections from it, but because it was in such lovely shape, I cannot bear to cut it! I had to go and order another cheap book to cut! Thank you -- great buy!!!
